Beyond the Mountain Brewing Company opened its doors in Gunbarrel early this month, bringing more flavor for those looking for a nice place to sit down for a brew. Managing member Charles Hixon and head brewer Morgan Way have had this as a goal for a long time — they’ve known each other since they were 15 and both started brewing in college. They hail from Virginia and Maryland, but had a hunch Colorado would be a good place to open a tap room. “Colorado has one of the best beer scenes and we wanted to learn from the best,” Hixon said. “So we...
Boulder County Commissioners approved a $426.9 million budget last week for the 2018 fiscal year. The budget includes a decrease in property tax of 2.117 mills to make the total county property tax at 22.726 mills for 2018. Commissioners estimate property tax revenue to come in at $178,590,811 — up from $165,014,873 in 2017 — based on increases in property values which enabled them to make the cut. “With rising property values you can collect the same amount of money with a lower mill levy,” Commissioner Deb Gardner said. “So it’s mostly a co...

The restroom will be a two-stall prefabricated building colored similar to the rest...
The Niwot United Methodist Church choir will be heading to the famous Carnegie Hall in 2018 to perform a new Christmas cantata by Pepper Choplin, a renowned composer, as part of a 200-member choir. Choir member Mike Weiss said that the choir performs a lot of Choplin’s music, and recently began posting videos of performances online. “We’ve done a lot of his music in the choir at church,” Weiss said. “Awhile ago we took to recording performances at the church and putting them on YouTube. Apparently someone found us on the site somehow as an aud...
The Women’s International Niwot Club (WINC) held the seventh-annual Holiday Fayre at the Left Hand Grange earlier this month. According to WINC president Deborah Fowler, 541 people stopped by the Fayre and contributed to the record bake sale for the event that raised $1,400. Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped by, and gift certificates were handed out from local merchants. “We were trying to make it a community event by promoting local businesses as well,” Fowler said. WINC had given out bags and maps...
Another statewide award has been given to administrators at Niwot High School, this time honoring assistant principal Andrea Smith. Smith earned the award from the Colorado Association of School Executives as Assistant Principal of the Year in the state, following NHS principal Eric Rauschkolb’s award earlier this year. “The recognitions we’ve received are really a reflection of the good work going on all over the place at NHS,” Rauschkolb said. “The teachers are amazing, the students for the m...

It was a snowy winter day in Eureka, PA, when Yoh’s mother went into labor. As if the urgency of the situation...
Weeks of rigorous memorization drills paid off for Niwot Elementary fifth-grader Greta Stauch last week when she claimed first place in the school’s annual spelling bee. Stauch correctly spelled ‘orthopedic’ to claim victory in the 12th round, after her lone remaining competitor, fellow fifth-grader Roland Pridgen, stumbled on ‘endeavor.’ “My dad was watching me when Roland was spelling his word,” said Stauch, who survived three rounds of written elimination tests before the final verbal round....

According to Boulder County Transportation’s Andrew Barth, the majority of those attending the Dec. 4, 71st Street Shoulders Project open house “were strongly in favor of all aspects of construction.” While the new alignment of 71st Street to Highway 52 was well received, many who left comments requested installing a traffic signal at the intersection. Barth responded by saying, “…area is controlled by CDOT (Colorado Department of Transportation) so we cannot accommodate {that request} at this time.” CDOT has been informed of the request. Ba...
The Niwot Historical Society received some good news - the 1910 fire cart was accepted in the Colorado Collections Connections’ top 10 significant artifacts list for 2017. The contest has been going on for five years, and Niwot has gotten enough votes from the public to be included on the list for the last two years — with the branded blacksmith doors making it in 2016. Niwot Historical Society president Kathy Koehler said that the cart is significant due to its construction and the time per...

Gunbarrel residents were able to get a first look and make comments about preliminary plans for changes to 71st Street at an open house, held at Emerson-Micro Motions in Gunbarrel on Dec. 4. Many in attendance felt that the changes were necessary. Lindsey Killion who lives in The Lookout said, “I think it’s a good idea that the county try something here because there are a lot of people who use this stretch, whether biking or walking. It’s kind of a dangerous scenario at this point.” Theodor...

There aren’t many students who would opt to spend a precious Saturday formally arguing about charged political topics or reciting long poems from memory, but then again, there aren’t many students like the polymaths of Niwot’s Forensics team. Led by co-captains Aileen Ma and Stephanie Reitzig, the team is off to a blistering start this year, with medal-winning performances from both their seasoned veterans as well as some high-spirited newcomers. Such was the case last Saturday at the annua...

Tip Top Savory Pies, a Boulder-based company, is looking to break into the local food scene and beyond. Currently only sold over the counter at Old Oak Coffeehouse in Niwot, their pies are mainly available by order. After opening last July, the business found that the pies are popular enough that two employees had to be hired. They aren’t pies in the sense one would think of in America. These pies are savory and sweet pies that come in a variety of flavors, and are based on the style of pies f...
Niwot has the good fortune of being Alyson Bell’s family. And, as it is with the best of kin, Bell’s positive impacts are deep and immeasurable. “I like to keep a full plate and keep it rolling” Bell said. And that truly is the Alyson Bell effect. Her personal touch on Niwot’s signature events such as Let’s Wine about Winter, Rock & Rails, and The Great Pumpkin Party, through her organizing and hands-on effort and by ensuring that graphics, printed materials and online presences are emblematic,...

Dear Editor: As long-time Boulder County resident, I had visited Niwot many times, and then in the summer of 2016 I moved here. There are many things I like here, especially the community spirit and occasional fun events. This includes the Thursday Night Music. True it is popular and many people drive here for it. I take that as a compliment that the city is putting on a good event. For one night a week I see no issue with it. Every time I've been, I've only seen people enjoying themselves. So it was with surprise that I read the letter from...

At the bazaar there will be information on safe topical uses, inhalation and other different methods of using the oils. “We feel like it’s our duty to provide solid public e...
An open records and open meetings petition filed against Boulder County by Gunbarrel resident Kristin Bjornsen went before a judge for a hearing earlier this month, but the verdict is still out as the judge took it under advisement. Bjornsen first filed a request for records containing Twin Lakes-related documents that have been heavily redacted. Under the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), citizens can petition a judge to order an entity to provide these records. Bjornsen’s complaint specificall...
The Niwot High School Key Club is working to help with this year’s Holiday Parade for the Enchanted Evening. Niwot’s Bell, Book, Candle & Coffee store, located at 198 2nd Avenue, has recently expanded its floor space and is adding many new lines of products. Owner, Chris Lucas’s plans are for the store to be Niwot’s department store. The store opened a year and a half ago, but in the last seven months, Lucas has slowly remodeled the retail space to include a kitchen where she brews coffee, and she has filled an adjoining room with some new categories of merchandise. Growing her merchandise lines into...
Standing with the Niwot Residents on Parking This is probably a no win situation for the residents, as even some of the people who manage the Left Hand Valley Courier are the same one in the NBA and NCA. I tend to agree with the residents on using the park for parking. It is close to the businesses, it will not disturb the bucolic residential area. There is a horde driven to these concerts. They are on a mission with all of their camping gear. The car doors slamming, people hailing fare thee well, engines will disturb the residents. The noise...
Niwot will soon be home to a new business that has been over 3 years in the works. Callie Craumer and daughter Caitlin will be opening a Starbuds Dispensary at 6924 N. 79th Street in Cottonwood Square Shopping Center that is close to completion. Total ballots counted for the county were unofficially 92,811, out of the 237,561 registered voters, representing roughly 39 percent of those eligible to vote. Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle has served four terms, and through this ballot measure will be able to run for a fifth term next year. Pelle said that the office is better served by...
To The Editor: I am opposed to the parking lot, which will be located along Murray Street, on the strip of land currently owned by BNSF railroad. Reasons for my opposition: The parking lot will change Murray Street from a rural setting to a city setting. Traffic will increase in the neighborhood. According to the Sept. 2016 traffic study done in Niwot (Fox, Tuttle and Hernandez), ten spaces were removed from downtown parking for striped parking spaces and bumper blocks between 2014 and 2016. The study recommended that employees be encouraged...

It was over a quarter of a century ago that JoAnn Bell and Nancy Hindman joined the Niwot Cemetery Association. At that time there were around a dozen people in the group. But now Bell and Hindman, both in their mid-eighties, are the only remaining participants on the association’s board of directors, and they’re asking for more folks to join them in preserving the cemetery located just west of 73 rd St. on Nimbus Rd. Described as a pioneer-style cemetery, Niwot Cemetery dates back to the lat...

Tibbitts’ engineering expertise, creativity, and ability to bring t...
The 2017 Golden Hammer Award for volunteer service to the Niwot Community was presented to Kathy Koehler at the Great Pumpkin Party Oct. 28. Koehler, a native of Boulder County, has been involved with the Niwot Community Association and the...
Imagine an enthralling space layered with luscious colors and compelling textures inspired by nature. Then add a dash of Bohemian flair mixed with a tad of the western spirit and a splash of Latin vibe and you have a sense of the ambience of Niwot’s Little Bird Boutique and Gallery. Liz Gould and Bruce Rabeler opened their Old Town Niwot store on a First Friday Artwalk night. Since that day six years ago, they’ve been warmly embraced and supported by Niwot shoppers, so much so that their sho...
Niwot High School’s production of The Drowsy Chaperone takes to the stage running from Thursday, November 9 through Sunday, November 12. All shows are at 7 p.m., except for the final show on Sunday, which is a matinee presented at 2 p.m. The play’s premise is a nod to old-time American jazz productions. It follows a quirky, middle-aged musical theater fan who has a running commentary on a fake production called The Drowsy Chaperone set in 1928. The complicated twists and turns of the actors weave together a rousing web of mistaken identities, d...
Roots, stems, leaves and more! Heatherwood first-graders are learning about plants this fall. As part of this unit of study, students took a field trip to Growing Gardens in north Boulder on Oct. 10, where they observed and tasted plants like carrots and sage, planted seeds to take home, studied bees, and even sampled fresh honey. Growing Gardens is a non-profit organization founded in 1998. Its mission is to cultivate community through sustainable urban agriculture....
Anyone who has tried to navigate Lookout Road or Spine Road knows about the traffic delays caused by street reconstruction. According to the City of Boulder website, street reconstruction included removing the existing pavement and sub-grade. The roadway is then reconstructed with six to eight inches of new asphalt. Traffic delays up to 15 minutes have been the norm. The project ran from Sept. 26 to Oct. 20. Anybody traveling on 71st Street in Gunbarrel knows that it needs repair too. According...

On Oct 16, LIGO announced its observatories were able to detect gravitational waves created by the collision of two neutron stars. The collision occurred on Aug. 17. The collision, known as a kilonova and similar to a supernova, simultaneously generated electromagnetic waves (light and gamma rays) and a gravitational wave, both travelling at the speed of light. LIGO detected the gravitational wave, while other observatories detected the electromagnetic wave. The collision also produced heavy metals, such as gold, silver, lead and uranium....
Efforts are underway to bring attention to one of Niwot’s most treasured historical gems – the Fire House Museum. It’s a tad too easy to be chatting on a stroll down 2nd Avenue and completely miss the lean wooden structure that sits back from the façades of the adjoining buildings. The Niwot Historical Society (NHS) recently put into motion two efforts – the renovation of the fire house museum building, and the restoration of the building site. NHS has successfully raised the needed funds to...
In an unassuming building in Gunbarrel lies a hidden gem, High Precision Devices, Inc. HPD has been in the headlines recently, because its seismic isolation platform was an integral part of the experiment that won the 2017 Nobel Prize in physics. The prize was awarded to three physicists, Drs. Rainer, Weiss Barry Barish and Kip Thorne, for the detection of a gravitational wave that was generated by a collision of two black holes over one billion years ago. Einstein predicted the existence of...

If you know of any deployed Soldiers/Sailors/Marines/Airmen that would like a package, and have an APO/FPO address that you can provide, please email editorial@lhvc.com.
