Ok. Now that warmer weather has arrived, you may be considering attacking some projects you have been putting off. I bought a pressure washer that has been waiting for 2 months for me to hook it up so I can really clean the garage. Maybe you are thinking of planting flowers, pulling weeds, going to the gym, or cleaning out your closet and refrigerator. Maybe you want to get on your bike or take a trip. All good intentions, but sometimes the hurdle to success is drumming up the motivation to get...

Niwot author Kristin Koval was interviewed about her new book "Penitence" by Ryan Warner of Colorado Public Radio on June 7 during the Lit Fest Event in Denver. Lit Fest is a celebration of writers and readers that spans eight days of workshops, craft seminars, readings, salons, business panels, agent meetings, and parties. Koval was interviewed by Warner for a Turn The Page portion of his daily show Colorado Matters. "Penitence" is the first book that Koval, a Niwot resident, has written, and w...
In the past, when local music fans wanted to listen to Niwot’s House Blend Band, they would head to the spaghetti-fueled summer concert series on Second Avenue. But this week, the Niwot favorites will be headlining at Rock & Rails. They’ll take the main stage at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 12. “The group was small when we first started, and the thought of ever headlining Rock & Rails wasn’t even a concept to me,” said Michael Tomich, the band’s co-founder. “By the time we realized that maybe we...

Ok. We have all read how important friendships are to your overall health and well-being. People experience less stress, less depression, and live longer lives if they have friends in their lives. Jane Fonda, for example, extolls the value of girlfriends over all her husbands. She said, "Friends make me stronger. They make me smarter. They make me braver." Look at "Grace and Frankie" or "The Golden Girls." Women's friendships is a real and important subject. Friends bring depth and richness to...
In just a few weeks, Rock & Rails returns to Whistle Stop Park on Thursday nights with the same positive audience energy that has persuaded some of Colorado's best bands to return year after year. As always, there will be dancing, food trucks, beverages, a 5 p.m. happy hour, volunteers who make guests feel at home, and "Gargoyles" enthusiastically offering helpful recycling and composting guidance. The 2025 series is also starting strong with perennial crowd favorite, Chris Daniels and the...

The House Blend Band kicked off this year's season of concerts in Niwot with a performance on 2nd Avenue Saturday, May 17. The closed-off street was filled with a cheerful audience sitting in a semi-circle around the stage in folding camp chairs, clapping and cheering on the band members. This was the first concert of many scheduled for this summer, with Rock & Rails opening June 5. The band, led by Old Oak Coffeehouse owners Michael Tomich and Patty Machen, was just one spectacle of the night,...

Ok. I recently gave my friend's grandson a book called "How Things Work." I gave it to him because I would want a book like that. I always want to know how things work. I can't imagine anyone not wondering why the sky is blue or where the birds go in a snowstorm or how the whole cicada cycle even happens. How do sump pumps work, anyway? It is all a mystery waiting to be unpacked. Curiosity is a gift. It is also a key. Curiosity is like opening a door to find another door. And then another. It...
Corn is coming back into season. Those sweet bursts of goodness highlight every summer event. What is Memorial Day without a bit of corn in your salad? What is Fourth of July without corn on the cob? Do you eat your corn on the cob back and forth like a typewriter or around? Do you start in the middle or the end? Kids love it. Adults love it. Corn is a gift that keeps giving. All the way through Thanksgiving. Here are a few recipes to try out this season. CLASSIC CORN SALAD Adapted from...

Ok. I try to avoid too much controversy, but it is time to discuss golf. I respect golfers and the Masters Tournament. I even followed Tiger Woods for a while. However, I just don't really get it. What used to be a game men played as a requisite for conducting business, is thankfully now a game for everyone. I want to be part of the party too. I want to conduct business too. But what happens if you just can't play very well? Or, in my case, not at all. Let's take a swing at golf. Golf is a game...
