Led by junior Christopher Wingfield, the Silver Creek boys swim team scored 87 team points to finish in 11th place at last weekend’s Class 4A Swimming & Diving Championships held at the Air Force Academy. Wingfield ended with weekend with two top-ten individual finishes, and was also a member of the 200 and 400-freestyle relay teams, which both finished seventh. Overall, the Raptors sent finalists to six of the meet’s twelve events, including all three relays. Silver Creek started the wee...
Tommy Stager, student-athlete from Niwot High School, has been named the recipient of the MaxPreps Male Athlete of the Year Award, presented in conjunction with the United States Marines Corps. The presentation will be made during the Senior Talent Show at Niwot High School on May 25 at 7 p.m. by special guest presenter Rulon Gardner, American Gold Medal Wrestler who competed in the 2000 Olympic Games, and U.S. Marine SGT Daniel Fitzgerald. MaxPreps, which is the online source for high school sports news, results and statistics, has teamed up...
On a boys track team that sometimes struggled to fill its highlight reel this season, Niwot senior Alex Oelsner often provided the missing footage. As the team’s leading thrower, Oelsner amassed several top 10 finishes in shot put this year, including fourth in the Northern Conference championships held May 5. He also competed in discus for the team, and even ran in the sprints from time to time. His season-best shot put attempt of 48 feet 10 inches at the Holy Family Tiger Tornado I...
It was a disappointing end to the season, but Niwot head soccer coach Stephen Dimit was in no way disappointed in his team’s performance against No. 2 seed Wheat Ridge in the second round of the Class 4A state tournament. “Everybody played really hard,” he said following the Cougars 3-0 loss to the Farmers last Saturday. “We didn’t connect as much as we could have, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. Everybody poured their heart into it, and they played for each other.” The Cougars were stymied...
Niwot senior Lauren Wolf, a midfielder on the girls varsity soccer team, scored the game-tying goal with just 17 seconds remaining in Niwot’s first round playoff game against the Erie Tigers on May 10. Niwot went on to win the game 4-3 in the second overtime period, their first postseason victory since 2014. Wolf, a three-year varsity member and team’s Co-Captain, ended the season with three goals on four shots, the highest total of her career. Wolf also scored against Greeley Central and Mou...
Before last weekend’s St. Vrain New Balance Invitational, Niwot head track coach Maurice Henriques was hopeful his boys relay team would finally post a state qualifying time. With just one week left before the 2017 Class 4A Track & Field Championships, the crowded meet was the last chance they would get this season, and he knew they were close. “That’s our goal,” he explained following the Northern Conference championships, where all four relays finished in second place. “Hopefully, the weath...
The Niwot girls tennis team continued its recent run of dominant play with a sweep of all seven title matches at this year’s Class 4A, Region 5 Tournament, held at the Longmont Recreation Center on May 3 and 4. In total the Cougars scored 84 points to take first place out of the six-team field, well ahead of runner-up Longmont, which finished with 56 points on the day. Taylor Thulson at number one singles won 6-2, 6-2. Julia Pentz (two singles) and Rachel Drake (three singles) each dropped o...
Hunter Stephens, a senior at Niwot High School, has been an important part of the Cougar baseball team during his high school career. Stephens, who carries a 3.0 GPA, saw action in 11 varstiy games as a sophomore, batting .333. He worked his way into a regular varsity position as a junior, primarily playing third base while seeing some action on the mound, then moved to the outfield as a senior, while continuing to play third base and pitch. “He’s been playing baseball since he was four yea...
It just doesn’t get any more dramatic than Niwot’s playoff victory against the Erie Tigers on Wednesday night. In miserable, wet conditions, Niwot battled the Tiger’s hard-hitting physical attack to the point of exhaustion, twice coming back to tie the game, and then finally winning on senior Maddie Barkow’s “golden goal” in 98th minute. For senior and co-captain Kailee Stobbe, the hard fought win reflects the team’s commitment not just to the team, but to each other. “That game meant everything...
The Niwot girls track and field team can add another title to its already lengthy list: 2017 Northern League champions. In yet another dominating performance, the Cougars outscored their nearest opponent by more than 60 points to capture first place at last weekend’s conference meet, winning nine of the 19 events, including all three sprints and both hurdles races. Senior Alexis Carroll and junior Mary Gillett combined for five of the Cougars’ nine individual titles, and between them set thr...
Fairview High golfer Kelsey Webster won the American Junior Golf Association Girls’ Division title at Meadowbrook Country Club in Mt. Pleasant, WI, Sunday May 6, with scores of 83-82, for a 165 total. In accepting the medal, Webster said, “This is my first AJGA event that I’ve ever played in.About a year ago I started playing golf seriously and my scores started dropping. It’s been really fun, such a fun journey.” Webster, who lives in Gunbarrel, continued, “I’d like to thank my dad and mom f...
McBride steps down as head coach Before the 2017 season began, Niwot head baseball coach Craig McBride had a roster full of nine potential pitchers and a heart full of hope. Facing a schedule full of dangerous conference foes including Mountain View and Silver Creek, the longtime coach was nonetheless cautiously optimistic about his senior-heavy team’s chances to sneak into the postseason “if our pitching goes well.” Of course, the Cougars and their fans now know how this story ends. Niwot...
The Niwot girls golf season came to an unexpectedly early end at the Class 4A Region 4 tournament last Friday. With a team score of 326 (+110), the Cougars finished seventh in the 10-team field, and no individual golfer qualified for the upcoming state tournament. Niwot head coach Ed Weaver was philosophical about his team’s struggles at Murphy Creek, and even if it wasn’t the fairytale ending he was hoping for, he nonetheless considers the 2017 a success. “We had an interesting year,” he said...
This year’s PAC-12 men’s golf conference championship was held at Boulder Country Club over the weekend. Rain and then about four inches of snow held up Saturday’s rounds, and leftover snow on Sunday morning made for even more delays. But the golfers were able to play 54 holes, meeting the criteria of 36 for an NCAA-sanctioned event. Bob Webster — who belongs to the club and serves on the board of directors, along with acting as governor of the Colorado Golf Association — said that hosting t...
The Niwot baseball team snapped its five-game losing streak Thursday, April 27, with a convincing 11-1 road victory over crosstown rival Longmont. In a gaudy show of offense, the team went 14-for-30 at the plate with five extra-base hits. Nine Cougars hit safely on the day, including sophomore infielder Joey DesEnfants, who had his first multi-hit game since March. For head coach Craig McBride, it’s always good to beat the rival Trojans, even when there’s not much at stake. “It was nice going...
Ahead of last Thursday’s match against the league-leading Northridge Grizzlies, Niwot midfielder Charlotte McCarthy knew that the stakes were high for the Cougars. With a victory over the Grizzlies, Niwot would be in a position to win the Northern League outright for the first time in nearly a decade, automatically earning a berth to the Class 4A playoffs. A loss to the Grizzlies, on the other hand, would muddy the playoff picture considerably. “We’re extremely excited about North...
Niwot girls golf coach Ed Weaver was uncharacteristically subdued about his young team’s performance at a pair of non-league tournaments last week. “We did…okay,” said Weaver, clearly choosing his words carefully. “We continue to get experience that’s going to be valuable for us.” On April 24, Niwot joined 19 other teams, including Class 5A state contenders Colorado Academy and Cherry Creek, at the par-70 Ranch Country Club in Westminster for the Willie DiLoretto Invite. Facing both a challe...
It was business as usual for the Niwot girls track team at the Stutler Bowl Twilight Invitational, held April 24 at Cherry Creek High School. Against a talented field comprised of several of Colorado’s top-ranked Class 4A and 5A squads, the Niwot girls scored 98.7 points on the day to edge out Rocky Mountain (96) for the team title. It was also business as usual for Niwot junior Mary Gillett, who finished the day with multiple individual titles, including the 100-meter dash (12.38 seconds), t...

The Silver Creek boys swim team is closing in on the finish of the 2017 season. This last week saw the Raptors swimming in the Mountain View Lions 2017 Last Chance Invitational, Silver Creek’s third and final non-conference, multi-team invitational meet of the spring. Silver Creek, which includes swimmers from both Silver Creek and Niwot High, finished seventh out of the 10 teams in the meet. Divers Benjamin Willett and Ashton Hubert continued their strong recent showings, placing 11th and 12th, respectively. The Raptors’ two top pla...
Niwot High School senior Elizabeth Elton is not only a 4.0 IB student (4.4 GPA weighted) and a speech captain for the Forensics team. She also competes in weightlifting and Cross-Fit competitions. Though she has yet to turn 18, she moved into the women’s 18-35 division for the Cross-Fit Open this year, as she will reach that age before the regional competition. As a forensics captain, “I teach forensics members about the different events and coach them on speeches,” she explained. Elton compe...
Led by Maddie Barkow and Kailee Stobbe, the Niwot girls soccer team outscored its opponents 16-3 in three games last week, including a convincing 4-2 win over the high-scoring Erie Tigers (8-4) and a 10-0 rout of the Greeley Central Wildcats (1-10), which saw eleven Cougars tally a point. For head coach Stephen Dimit, though, the game of the week was the Cougars’ narrow 2-1 win over crosstown rival Longmont, a team far more competitive than a 2-10 record suggests. “Any time we can get a win over...
It was déjà vu all over again last Saturday against Thompson Valley, as the Niwot baseball team took another hard-earned lead into the seventh inning only to see it slip away, bit by agonizing bit. Not even heroics from standout shortstop Skye Messinger could save the day, as Niwot pitchers allowed five hits and a walk in the bottom of the seventh to hand league foe Thompson Valley an 8-7 walk-off victory. For head coach Craig McBride, the Eagles’ late game comeback was just one more ind...
Rosemary Morrissey is looking forward to getting back on her mountain bike this summer to get back in training for cyclo-cross competition. Morrissey, a sophomore at Niwot High School, finished seventh at USA Cycling Nationals in Hartford, CN, January 8th in the Women’s Junior 15-16 division, after winning the Colorado state title. Cyclo-cross combines cross-country running with biking, Morrissey explained, comparing it to a steeplechase. “The races usually last 40 minutes,” she said. “You...
The Niwot girls tennis team wrapped up its regular season without hardly breaking a sweat in the final two matches, going 7-0 against Northridge on Monday, April 17 and running the table again vs. Greeley Central, 7-0, on Wednesday April 19. Against Northridge the Cougars didn’t lose a set; the day’s closest match was a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number one doubles by understudy duo Jewel Ng and Sreeya Kairamkonda, both of whom have stepped up and ably filled roster spots vacated due to injuries and...
The Niwot girls tennis team keeps setting them up and knocking them all down. The Cougars played four matches in five days, three of those on the road, and finished up the week’s play with a dominant total line of 26 wins against only 2 losses. On Monday April 10 and Tuesday April 11, at Centaurus and Mountain View, respectively, the Cougars steamrolled their way to consecutive 7-0 victories, losing only 11 games total in the process. After a day off, Niwot traveled just down the road to m...
Of the many strange and wondrous things that have happened so far in 2017, the March weather in Colorado deserves a prominent place in the conversation. For the first time in living memory, the unusually warm, dry conditions meant the local high school sports teams enjoyed an early-spring schedule blessedly free of weather-related cancellations and postponements. Except for the Niwot girls golf team. It turns out that their rainy opening day at the aptly named Chilly Chili tournament on March...
The Niwot girls soccer team put on another scoring clinic in front of the home crowd last Saturday, getting points from eight players in a 7-0 rout of the Mead Mavericks (4-5-1). For senior forward Meghan Jeske, who scored her second goal of the season in the game’s 17th minute, the lopsided win was especially gratifying after Thursday’s unexpected 2-1 loss to Centaurus. “It was a really big win, because we were able to come back from the other day,” she said. “I just felt like we were working t...
The Boulder County Championship meet has been a mid-April fixture on the calendar of local track and field teams for more than four decades, but no team has made its presence felt there more than the Niwot girls. At this year’s event, held April 15 at Everly-Montgomery Field, the Cougars stormed to their eighth straight BoCo title, winning nine individual events and scoring 172 team points, nearly double that of second-place Broomfield (94). In a season already filled with personal bests and m...
The Silver Creek boys swim team came out on top in a tri-meet home matchup with Estes Park and Valley, with a first place score of 184 points, improving their meet record to 2-1 on the season. The Raptors came in first in 8 out 12 events on the day. Two of those top finishes came from Carson Simon, in the 100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley. Other first-place finishers in the individual events were Dakota Casey in the 100m freestyle, Matthew Winn in the 100m backstroke, and Christopher Wingfield in the 200m freestyle. Silver Creek...
For the second Saturday in a row, the Niwot baseball team took a tough loss at home to a league foe, but unlike last weekend’s 16-6 debacle against Centaurus, there wasn’t much to criticize about the Cougars’ performance against the Mountain View Mountain Lions. Up 4-1 after the third inning, junior pitcher Caleb Martinez had Mountain View’s heavy hitters flummoxed, and Niwot’s batters were taking advantage of an error-prone Mountain Lion infield. Even after Mountain View took the lead in the to...
On an otherwise beautiful spring day, the Niwot Cougars baseball team turned in its ugliest performance of the season last Saturday, losing 16-6 at home to league opponent Centaurus (3-9, 1-7) in the second of a two-game series. Niwot was outplayed in all three phases of the game, going a collective 6-for-30 at the plate on the day, while committing five errors and surrendering 13 hits. For Head Coach Craig McBride, the defeat was a discouraging step backwards for his recently improved squad....
After consecutive match losses to close out the month of March left the squad in a 1-2 hole, the Niwot girls tennis team came out swinging after spring break. The Cougars posted three consecutive dominant victories in the first week of April, winning 6-1 over Thompson Valley, 6-1 over Broomfield and posting a 7-0 shutout against Silver Creek to give Niwot a 4-2 overall recordd on the season. Niwot’s two losses in March, both on the road, came at the hands of the cream of this year’s 4A crop, a 5-2 defeat against 8-time state champion Che...
On April 8, the Niwot track and field teams traveled to south Denver to compete in the small but exclusive Mullen Invitational, and once again there were many familiar names at the top of the girls leaderboard. Niwot junior Mary Gillett finished second in the 200-meter dash, with a season best time of 25.10 seconds. She also claimed a second and another season-best in the 300m hurdles (45.14). Senior Alexis Carroll finished second in the 100m hurdles (14.73, a season-best) and the triple jump...
Niwot girls head soccer coach Stephen Dimit was unabashedly pleased with his team’s performance at home against the Palmer Ridge Bears last Saturday. Behind junior Anna McCarthy’s two goals, the Cougars beat the Bears 4-0 to post their third consecutive victory and sixth consecutive half without allowing a point. “I’m really happy,” a grinning Dimit admitted following the game. “It was a great game. This was a really big win for us.” An animated Niwot offense generated a scoring chance in the...
The Silver Creek boys swim team has passed the quarter-pole of its 2017 season, with some goals already accomplished and others still outstanding. The Raptors’ meet record for the season stands at 2-1, with a win over Longmont (122-63) and a close loss at Thompson Valley (92-88) before spring break, followed by a solid victory over Mountain View (126-57) April 6. Silver Creek also finished in 13th place at the Dick Rush Memorial Invitational before the break, swimming in competition against 46 teams from across both the 5A and 4A state division...
Dylan Hollingsworth, former Niwot High School football coach, was given a one-year deferred sentence March 23, 2017, on misdemeanor charges in a plea bargain approved by the Boulder County Court. Hollingsworth was accused of choking a 17-year-old student and kneeing him in the groin on Oct. 27, 2016, during a PE class, resulting in charges of second- and third-degree assault. As part of the plea agreement, those charges were dismissed and Hollingsworth entered a plea of guilty to misdemeanor harassment and criminal mischief charges. Conditions...
After a shaky 2-4 start to the season, the Niwot Cougars baseball team won three of five games last week at the Coach Bob National Invitational in Phoenix, AZ. The Cougars have now won five of their last seven games, improving their record to 5-6 heading into the heart of their conference schedule. For Head Coach Craig McBride, the annual trip to the desert is an important way to build team chemistry. “Being together for five days is more of a brotherhood. They have a lot of fun, and s...
BASEBALL Pate Katechis (Niwot) is second on the team in homeruns with three for Kearney-Nebraska. Katechis, who plays leftfield, is hitting .228 on the season, with 15 RBI. He had two doubles, scoring a run and driving in two runs, in an 11-2 win over Washburn March 31. Greg Reynolds (Silver Creek) is hitting .342 for Colorado Mesa this season. Reynolds, who started at shortstop and moved to third base, had two hits including a double, scoring a run in an 11-10 win over New Mexico Highlands April 1. Ford Ladd (Niwot) is hitting .500 for New Yor...
The Niwot girls track and field team turned in another superb performance at last week’s Lyons Invitational, capturing seven event titles on their way to a fifth straight team win. Junior Mary Gillett nabbed two wins on the day, setting a meet record in the 400-meter run with a time of 57.16 seconds and posting another meet record in the long jump (16 feet, 17 inches). Senior Alexis Carroll’s sub-15 time of 14.96 in the event’s 100-meter hurdles was good for both first and the meet’s new mar...
Niwot senior Jake Butler recently signed a Letter of Intent to play golf at Midland University (Fremont, NE). Butler, a four-year varsity player for the Cougars, led the team to its first ever appearance in the 2016 State Championship as a team. He tied for third in the 2016 Class 4A Northern Regional, and was Second Team All-Conference. Butler is also on the All-Star Academic Team for both CHSAA and the Junior Golf Association of Colorado and has been ranked in the top 25 in the Rocky Mountain...
The Niwot Cougar baseball team snapped its four-game losing streak with a sweep of the Greeley Central Wildcats in a two-game home-and-home series last weekend. Freshman Cameron Hassert laid down a bases-loaded bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning to snatch a walk-off victory in the series opener at Niwot, and two days later the Cougar offense pounded the Wildcats for 11 hits in a 16-3 rout at Greeley. After going 0-4 to start the season, Niwot Head Coach Craig McBride was relieved to...
The only thing predictable about high school sports is their unpredictability, and nowhere was that more evident than in the performance of the Niwot girls soccer team last week. On Tuesday, the Cougars floundered on both offense and defense in their first ever loss to cross-town rival Skyline. Blown scoring chances and a flagging defense plagued the Cougars in both halves, allowing the upstart Falcons to come away with a 4-2 victory. It was a different story for the Cougars on Thursday. At...
The Niwot girls track and field team continued to dominate the local competition, picking up wins at the St. Vrain Re-1J District meet on March 23 and at the Broomfield Shootout on March 25. The boys also fared well at the District meet, finishing second out of nine teams, and placed 23rd at the Broomfield meet, in a 33-team field that included several Class 5A schools. It was another impressive week for junior Mary Gillett and her senior teammate Alexis Carroll. At the St. Vrain meet, held...
Daisha Agho, who has coached Berthoud volleyball for the past eight years, has been named the new Niwot High volleyball coach. Under Agho, Berthoud finished with a record of 21-6 last season, advancing to the state Class 4A tournament. There the Spartans beat Windsor before being eliminated by eventual state champion Lewis-Palmer. Berthoud finished 16-11 in 2015 following a 20-7 mark in 2014, and has made it to state in three of the last four years. Agho, who lives in Firestone with her husband...
The Niwot girls tennis team lost 5-2 in an away match to perennial power Cheyenne Mountain on Wednesday, March 22. It was the second straight loss on the road for the team after a home win over Colorado Academy to begin the season. At the top of the singles bracket, Taylor Thulson went down in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, her first defeat of the season. Rachel Drake at number three also fell in two sets, 6-4, 6-2. The Cougars’ lone singles victory on the day came in the number two spot, as Julia Pentz climbed out of an early hole to win in three s...
Niwot’s girls tennis team suffered a close loss at Valor Christian on Monday, March 13, falling to the Eagles by the slimmest of margins at 4-3. Two of the Cougars’ three wins on the day came in the singles brackets, with Julia Pentz at number two singles cruising at 6-1, 6-0, and Rachel Drake at number three singles finishing things off in a close second-set tiebreaker at 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). At number one singles Taylor Thulson fought back from an early deficit, only to fall in the final tiebreaker, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-2). Number one dou...
In a sport where results are measured in thousandths of seconds, and athletes are judged by measured individual results, it can be hard to quantify abstract concepts like unity and team chemistry. But that doesn’t mean such things aren’t critical to a team’s success. When members of the Niwot track teams take the field at their events this season, Head Coach Maurice Henriques wants each one to remember that the whole team has their back. “Our theme this year is loyalty,” he explained. “You’ll s...
The Niwot Cougars are still looking for their first win of the season, after going 0-2 against Northridge in a home-and-home series last weekend. Northridge outscored the Cougars 18-9 over the two games, as Niwot’s pitchers once again struggled, giving up a total of 19 hits, including three triples and a home run. For head coach Craig McBride, starting the year with four straight conference losses is definitely a setback, but not entirely surprising, given the caliber of competition t...
On March 14, the Niwot girls soccer team traveled to Arvada’s North Area Athletic Complex for a non-conference game against the Standley Lake Gators. In a hard-fought contest that left both teams battered and bruised, Standley Lake took advantage of some rare miscues by the Cougar defense to earn a 2-1 victory, their second of the year. Niwot managed just four shots on the day, and spent most of the second half in their own end of the field, fending off a relentless Standley Lake attack. The G...
