Niwot has always prided itself on being a true small town – no big box stores, parades for every occasion, and lots of "mom and pop" businesses. This all adds up to a perfect atmosphere in which local artists can shine. And local art is certainly thriving in Niwot this holiday season. The Open Studios Pop! Gallery celebrated a grand opening during Niwot's Enchanted Evening, Friday, Nov. 25. Twenty different artists working in numerous mediums are featured in the spruced-up space that p...
For the past two weekends Niwot celebrated Christmas in style. A Holiday Market provided shoppers the opportunity to buy local goods and mingle, and throughout town, a theater troupe entertained with a live, nomadic rendition of The Nutcracker. The Spark, a nonprofit Boulder theater group, put a unique spin on the Christmas classic by creating a "theme park-style performance opportunity." Their program, "Tales on the Trails," emerged from the COVID lockdown and resulted in outdoor walking...
Louisville Mayor Ashley Stolzmann prevailed in the Nov. 8 election to replace Matt Jones as Boulder County Commissioner for District 3. She won her race by a wide margin, and when she takes office, she will be representing the needs of the Niwot community as part of her work. Stolzmann brings a great deal of civic service to her new role. Prior to the election and prior to her service as Louisville's mayor, she was, among other things, a member of Louisville's Finance Committee, represented her...

Monte Comer was a kid with a lot of friends. He was a fixture on his baseball team in the Gunbarrel Lefthand Valley Recreation Association, or GLVRA as it was known (now Niwot Youth Sports). He had buddies on his basketball team, his Boy Scout troop, his class at Niwot Elementary School and everywhere else. “Back then I don’t think they had the Pee Wee Football they have now,” said Monte’s sister, Jamie Comer Smith. “I believe he would have played football.” That was the mid-1970’s,...

And on Tuesday, Dec. 6, the Boulder County Commissioners approved a five-megawatt, 24-acre solar farm on his property. The new parking lot in Niwot was officially dedicated in a brief ceremony Dec. 2, with Niwot Business Association president Eric Bergeson presiding. Bergeson noted that the project had been long in the works and thanked all those who saw it through to completion. While the parking lot has been open for several months, glitches with the functioning of the two charging stations delayed the official ribbon cutting. Bergeson also noted that approval has already been obtained for expansion of the...
Sometime between 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2 and 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, vandals threw a large rock through the bay window of Inkberry Books in Cottonwood Square. Nothing appeared to be stolen from the store, but "glass was everywhere" according to Gene Hayworth, who co-owns the bookstore with his partner, Keith Waters. "Dawn Dunlop from Garden Gate saw it when she came to work Saturday and called," Hayworth said. The Boulder County Sheriff is investigating. "Keith talked to Officer...

The mid-20th century modern, bi-level home is a classic design found around the country and in many Boulder County neighborhoods. Decades after their building date, many of these homes are in need of a refresh. When Niwot-based Osmosis Art and Architecture was called on to participate in the design for a Boulder-based home in this style, the result led to a significant industry award. On Nov. 5, the project earned Osmosis a MAME (Marketing and Merchandising Excellence) award sponsored by the Hom...
It was well below freezing Friday night when a somber crowd gathered at the Niwot Children's Park. People huddled under the canopy near the reading tree, some had flowers, others were passing out candles. They had gathered to celebrate the life of Peter Guthrie Bonn-Elchoness. Peter was a senior at Niwot High School and an avid fencer. He passed away unexpectedly Nov. 12, 2022. To celebrate his life and the way he touched so many lives, his friends, peers and others gathered to remember him....

The new owner of the property, John Fischer, reached out to Chamberlain to create the mural. "I just told Denise to do whatever she'd like," Fischer said. Over the years, Rodgers has not been daunted by broken and replaced bones, deep bruises, illnesses, and the array of forces nature has...
I don't read memoirs very often, which is a shame because they are so unique and interesting. That's certainly the case with Kelly Daniels' book Cloudbreak, California. What is perhaps most unique about it is the way it's organized. There's a sense of chronological order--the first chapter begins with Daniels reflecting on his childhood--but as the story progresses, we revisit the past alongside him. For example, there's this excellent part where Daniels is describing a sojourn into a...
On Nov. 9, it was reported that Democrat Tracey Bernett won in a landslide to continue to serve as the state representative of House District 12, which includes Niwot, Louisville, Lafayette and Superior. Bernett won 78.7% of the votes and her opponent, Republican Anya Kirvan, won 21.3% of the votes. It was a stunning victory for Bernett, but her victory was overshadowed by the filing of criminal charges against her related to whether or not she resided in the legislative district she was elected to represent. The Boulder District Attorney’s O...
