  • Brewers' cooperation a recipe for success

    Sep 21, 2022

It is not uncommon to see similar businesses in fierce competition with each other. All it takes is 15 minutes of TV to see the competition between grocery stores, car companies and yes, even lawyers. But the world of independent brewers is a bit different – congenial and downright cooperative. That spirit of cooperation was on display at a recent Thursday night Rock & Rails concert when there was a problem with one of the beer lines. "Dan (Hawk) came up to me and told me that one of the tap l...

The mural might also make you want to learn more and ensure that the level of hate, ignorance, and greed that led to this horror never happens again. The mural...

  • September Book Review: "Wise Inside"

    Hannah Stewart|Sep 21, 2022

This book is not a casual read. It is a quick one, sitting at just over 100 pages, but it definitely shouldn't be rushed. This month, Inkberry Books lent me Danae Shanti's book Wise Inside, and I honestly didn't know what to make of it at first. Initially, especially based on the cover, I thought it would be some chakra-inner-self type of book, and there are elements of that. Reading the first few chapters, I had the impression that it was more on the self-help side of literature, and there are...

  • Homecoming - 50 years for Niwot High School

    Bruce Warren|Sep 14, 2022

It took 50 years, but Niwot High School finally played and won a truly "home" football game. And a steady mist throughout the evening didn't seem to put a damper on the attendance, or the team's overall performance. The 50th anniversary of the opening of Niwot High School brought out former students, players and faculty from across the years as the school celebrated with a 15-6 victory over Skyview in the first varsity football game ever played at the school on Sept. 9. The school, which opened...

  • New lecture series begins from Niwot Historical Society

    Hannah Stewart|Sep 14, 2022

Railroads are like the veins going to and from the heart of the country. In years past, they were numerous, a near constant; today, they almost seem like something from the past. Similarly, as there are increasingly more talks about sustainable energy, conversations about the use of coal seem to be on the decline. Local historian Larry Dorsey is coming to Niwot’s Left Hand Grange on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m. to discuss the rich history of the area, especially as it relates to coal mining and railroads. His upcoming lecture, entitled “Black...

  • Improving air quality in your home

    Katrina Stroud|Sep 14, 2022

Lately, wildfires burning in Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California, have made it nearly impossible to see the Rocky Mountains from the Niwot-Gunbarrel area, and the air quality is noticeably hazy. Luckily, there are some ways in which you can improve the air quality in your home: • The most obvious solution is to decorate your rooms with houseplants. NASA has revealed that houseplants can remove up to 87% of air toxins within 24 hours. Other research has shown that indoor plants improve concentration and productivity, reduce stress...

    Kristy Zado|Sep 7, 2022

Gearing up for this week's Niwot High School 50 year celebration, we present a FLASHBACK from 1972: • Kids in Niwot were playing the first video game, PONG and hacky sack. • The cost of goods was low but there was a recession on the horizon. If you were shopping in July 1972, you probably would have been pleased with prices overall. A 5-pound cantaloupe cost the inflation-adjusted equivalent of $3.86. A rib-eye steak was $2.49 a pound, the equivalent of $17.50 a pound today. • Peter Max sneak...
