After a series of false-starts and long delays, the 14-space public parking lot on the west side of downtown Niwot could be open to cars in the coming weeks, according to representatives of the Niwot Business Association, who said the final permitting issues have been settled, and just one piece of the puzzle-solar bollard lights-remains. • Marshall Fire recovery

Deryn Davidson and Sharon Bokan, Colorado State University Extension Boulder County|Jan 5, 2022

We have watched the scenes from Colorado Springs (Waldo Canyon Fire in June of 2012) and California where wildfires reached into our towns and cities destroying hundreds of homes in a matter of hours. Most Front Range inhabitants would never have thought that it would happen so close to home. Our idea that wildfires are confined to forested areas and during summer has been challenged and is no longer the norm. We need to be prepared and able to recover should the unthinkable happen. Our...

In the early hours of the morning in Oct. 2017, a fire broke out on the 200 block of Franklin Street in historic Niwot. While no one was physically hurt, the community felt the loss of Colterra restaurant, with the "barn building" badly burned and deemed uninhabitable. Years, public forums, a development moratorium and a property sale later, redevelopment is finally set to begin. Chef Bradford Heap bought the property, which had been home to Le Chantecler restaurant. He opened the popular...

  • Christmas brings tiding of new furry friends

    Kristen Arendt|Dec 29, 2021

The story, names, characters, and incidents portrayed below are fictitious. Any resemblance to actual persons or Christmas 2021 events is purely coincidental. Their 14-year-old dog had passed away the summer before and while they wanted another dog eventually, they weren't sure when that time would be. But when Jeremy stumbled across this particular puppy on the Human Society's website, he knew that pup was the one. Megan agreed as so...

  • Correction

    Courier Staff|Dec 22, 2021

In the Dec. 15 issue of the Left Hand Valley Courier we incorrectly attributed the mural in the Niwot Road underpass to Ellen Haswell. While Ms. Haswell did help with many aspects of the mural, it was primarily the work of Giselle “Bre” Thiele. We apologize for any confusion. Ms. Haswell is the author of “A Little Book of Words for Those Who Grieve....

  • What season is it?

    Dec 22, 2021

Just as it should be beginning to look a lot like Christmas, a weather phenomenon more commonly seen in the summer months made an appearance over Niwot. On Dec. 15, a double-rainbow appeared west of town as a fast-approaching snow squall came over the mountains, bringing cold air, gusty winds, and a very brief spate of precipitation....

  • Readers flock to the adventures of a birding Big Year

    Kristen Arendt|Dec 15, 2021

As 2021 draws to a close, we look ahead to 2022 with hopes for a big (and better) year. However, few people likely have the same definition of a Big Year as local author and birding expert, John Vanderpoel. In May, Vanderpoel published his book "Full Chase Mode: Big Year of Birding in North America" which follows the 365 days he spent chasing a birding record in 2011, in an endeavor known in the birding world as a "Big Year." For birders, doing a Big Year is a kind of bucket list project. For...

  • Road Warriors: Volunteer crew handles traffic during Niwot events

    Jocelyn Rowley|Dec 15, 2021

Behind any community event in Niwot, there is an unsung army of volunteers, handling details and logistics that most attendees overlook. Among them is the Niwot road crew, a group that has been dedicated to keeping the town's parades and festivals pedestrian-friendly since 2014. "We started with seven, and it blossomed from there," Dick Piland said of the group he founded as Niwot Community Association president nearly a decade ago. "It was amazing. We had people calling up insisting they get...

  • Bobcats in Niwot

    Katrina Stroud|Dec 15, 2021

On Tuesday, Dec. 7, Niwot resident Steve Herring found three bobcats lounging on Paiute Avenue. He was walking his dogs at 9 a.m. when he saw the felines, two lying together on a neighbor's front lawn, while the other sat by the shoe of a gutter. Herring watched them in awe for about five minutes, and none of the bobcats minded him or his dogs. Herring said he has heard other rumors of a bobcat appearing in the same backyard and another one walking behind Niwot High School. As of now, these...

A temporary traffic signal has been installed at Paiute Avenue during construction so residents and school staff and visitors can safely exit the...

  • 'Little Sir Echo" in Niwot

    Nellie Nibnose|Dec 15, 2021

When I was small there was a catchy little ditty about an echo. Little sir echo, How do you do? Hello (hello) Hello (hello) ...which has now given me an earworm. But never mind. Several weeks ago, I was on a stroll with my good friend Glinda. As we often do, we walked through the underpass for Niwot Road. We always enjoy all the glorious mural paintings down there, and Glinda let out a lovely expletive, which showed her appreciation for the magnificent artwork. As she spoke, there it was, a...

"A few years ago we had a few clients over the course of a couple years who did not want to go to the hospital on paramedics' suggestions," said Katherine Wiser, the Longmont MOW development and communications director. "And the reason was that they didn't know...

  • December book review

    Hannah Stewart|Dec 15, 2021

Grief is a difficult thing. On one hand, we're often told to go through the stages, heal and move on. But on the other hand, it's not clear how long those stages "should" last, and we can be pressured to feel as though the healing is complete before we're ready. What I love about Niwot resident Ellen Haswell's book, "A Little Book of Words for Those Who Grieve,'' is that the whole book takes you through the process, and while it's a short read, it feels like you can take your time. With only 59...

  • Unseasonably dry weather impacts more than just the early ski season

    Kristen Arendt|Dec 8, 2021

As the Christmas carol goes, it's beginning to look a lot like ... well ... not exactly Christmas. Or at least not a wintery December, as Niwot has yet to see any significant snow accumulation this season.. That, along with unseasonably warm temperatures, has residents wondering if winter will ever show up. And while Colorado's warm weather and dry conditions could easily change at the drop of a hat (as the saying goes, if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes) the longer-term consequenc...

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the latest first measurable snowfall (0.5") in Boulder was November 26, 1910 (although the records prior to 1948 are suspect). The latest first snowfall since 1948 (considered to be more accurate) is November 17, 2016. Either way we are past both dates. On average, Boulder receives 18 inches of precipitation per year. While Boulder has received 20.2" of precipitation thanks to a very wet 2021 spring, since August, Boulder...

  • Think local when considering your year-end giving

    Jocelyn Rowley|Dec 1, 2021

In 2020, charitable giving rose to an all-time high in the U.S., even as many Americans struggled with uncertainty and disruptions. While that is good news for the nation's non-profit organizations, the unfortunate reality is that much of the bounty went to high profile causes and groups, leaving small and locally-focused charities scrambling to make up for lost fundraising opportunities. As 2021 comes to a close, many of those groups could still use some help to balance the scales. "There are a...

Now the decorating skills of Niwot's community are being put to the test with the return of Niwot's annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest. Local realtor Deborah Reed Fowler, of DRF Real Estate LLC, Colorado Landmark Realtors, created the contest last year...

Jane Austen, by way of the character Caroline Bingley said, "I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading." This is a sentiment shared by many bookworms and writers alike, and it's also a sentiment expressed by a few of the authors at the Wandering Jellyfish's holiday author fair last Saturday. Instead of the formal book readings the shop has previously hosted, Saturday was an opportunity for authors to connect with their readers, chat with customers and sign books. There, local...

  • Longmont forms committee to evaluate formation of a library district

    Hannah Stewart|Nov 24, 2021

Many see libraries as central fixtures of a community, but many also simply see libraries as buildings that house books and movies. Libraries have the opportunity to provide so much more than that. Oakland, Calif., has a tool library, where people can rent out equipment; Memphis, Tenn's central library, which is a National Medal Winner, has a studio called CLOUD901. This studio boasts professional grade lighting, film and editing equipment which is available to the community, specifically...
