  • Young NHS gymnasts keep improving

    Bruce Warren|Oct 19, 2022

The Niwot High gymnastics team may be short on experience, but it hasn't been an obstacle so far as the Cougars defeated Broomfield in a dual meet Oct. 12 by a score of 171.90 to 169.85. "We have a really young team," Head Coach Marisa Purcell said. We have two seniors, and one of them is injured. So we have mostly freshmen and sophomores." While Purcell was happy to win the dual meet, her focus is on Regionals, where the top three scores get averaged. She has about 10 athletes competing at the...

She believes that much of her recent success can be credited to her teammates, including sophomore Anne Haley, who leads Niwot with 346 assists. Although they have struggled over the past two weeks, the Cougars haven't faltered from their game plan, staying true to what they want to do this season. Niwot started the game off with the ball, but after driving it to the 30 yard-line, failed to convert on a fourth down pass. Frederick scored in only two plays with a 50-yard rushing...

Shults gave special recognition to head coach Kelly Christensen and a slew of others for helping make her senior season memorable. "I definitely have to credit it to our coaches," Shults said. "Our coaches are...

  • Niwot overcome by Thompson Valley 50-7

    Isaac Stephens|Oct 5, 2022

The Niwot High School football team is now 3 - 2 on the season, but unlike last week's win over Battle Mountain, the Cougars were the team on the short end of a lopsided score. Niwot lost 50-7 in a game that was filled with both offensive and defensive struggles. Niwot started the game receiving the kickoff, but a dropped kick return put the ball inside of the Cougars' own 10 yard-line. It didn't get much better as the offense went three and out and had to punt from their own 10 yard-line....

"It's been a long journey, just playing all four yours going to state,"...

  • NHS freshman golfer heads to State

    Patricia Logan|Sep 28, 2022

It was a cool, dreary day on the golf course at Riverdale Knolls in Brighton last week. But a ray of light shone through the gray skies. Niwot High freshman Jackson Sessa qualified for State. “I’m pretty happy. I was not originally thinking that I would qualify because I knew that our region was very tough, and because of the weather. I wasn’t sure I would be able to play my best,” Sessa said. He shot a 79, putting him in a tie for 16th place at the regional 4A tournament. “It was cold and I didn’t start off great but I was able to turn it aro...

The Niwot Cougars made the 3-hour trip to Battle Mountain High School on Friday, Sept. 23, upsetting the Huskies in their Homecoming game as they beat them, 42-13. The defense played a huge role in the victory, and the offense didn't shy away from the scoreboard. The game started slowly with both offenses failing to get a first down for a combined seven drives. It ended up being Battle Mountain that got the first first-down as they strung together some short plays with two longer rushes that...

The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) announced on Sept. 23 that Niwot will enter this season's new-look championship as the No. 8 seed. Head coach Aimee Hites' Cougars just barely earned themselves a first round home meet...

  • Story Behind the Name: Canar Field

    Leigh Suskin and Kathy Trauner|Sep 21, 2022

If you're raising some young baseball players, or just have a love of the game, you probably know Canar Field at the Niwot Youth Sports complex known as Hangge Fields at Monarch Park. It's the largest of the six fields, often used for "senior" players between 13 and 15 years old. Jason Canar of Longmont remembers when Canar Field was christened back in 1986, and the field still holds great meaning for him. "I'm incredibly proud, just to have it have that name," he said. Canar Field wasn't named...

  • Niwot girls take first in St. Vrain Cross Country Invitational

    Jack Carlough|Sep 21, 2022

Homecoming week took a hit on the Niwot cross country team. According to head coach Kelly Christensen, his Cougars were far from 100% when they lined up for the St. Vrain Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 17. But even without four top runners, the Niwot girls team squeaked out a first-place finish at Lyons High School. An encouraging takeaway for Christensen was that a few underclassmen, on both the girls and boys’ sides, were able to keep a shorthanded Cougars team competitive. Sophomore Bella Nelson led the Niwot girls with a third-place f...

"They were really in...

  • Charlie Kirtland's resiliency highlights strong week from Niwot boys tennis

    Jack Carlough|Sep 21, 2022

Being a freshman on varsity comes with its challenges. Instead of typically facing opponents of a similar age in middle school, there's a chance that someone four years older stands on the opposite side of the court. Charlie Kirtland is currently experiencing the ups and downs of being a freshman on the Niwot High School boys tennis team. He entered the season looking to claim Niwot's No. 3 singles spot and after impressing in his varsity debut against Dawson School in mid-August, he hasn't...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Gavin Burrage

    Jack Carlough|Sep 21, 2022

Outside linebacker Gavin Burrage wasn't going to allow Niwot football to lose its first-ever game played on campus. "The energy was really high, we were all performing our best and it was just a great game for me." The school, which opened...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Gabe Martinez

    Jack Carlough|Sep 14, 2022

Multi-talented is perhaps the best way to describe Gabe Martinez. In addition to becoming an Eagle Scout in February, the Longmont Christian School senior has taken on both baseball and tennis during his prep career. Because LCS doesn't support a boys tennis team, Martinez joined the Niwot High program during his freshman year. Cougar head coach Aimee Hites has utilized Martinez, a doubles player, in a swing role this season, which has him practicing with varsity but playing most of his matches...

  • Niwot boys tennis falls to Cheyenne Mountain in mid-season test

    Jack Carlough|Sep 14, 2022

In about one month's time, the Niwot boys tennis team will be squaring off against Colorado's top talent in the state championships. Head coach Aimee Hites' Cougars got a taste of that level of play on Sept. 8 when defending Class 4A co-champions Cheyenne Mountain visited campus. Disappointment soon arose, though, as Niwot, which placed third in state last year, mustered little success in a 5-2 loss to the Red-Tailed Hawks. Senior Luke Weber won the No. 1 singles match (6-1, 6-2) and junior LiCh...

  • FLASHBACK: NHS celebrates 50 years

    Kristy Zado|Sep 7, 2022

Gearing up for this week's Niwot High School 50 year celebration, we present a FLASHBACK from 1972: • Kids in Niwot were playing the first video game, PONG and hacky sack. • The cost of goods was low but there was a recession on the horizon. If you were shopping in July 1972, you probably would have been pleased with prices overall. A 5-pound cantaloupe cost the inflation-adjusted equivalent of $3.86. A rib-eye steak was $2.49 a pound, the equivalent of $17.50 a pound today. • Peter Max sneak...

  • Art Student of the Week: Jessi Lehman

    Gene Hayworth|Sep 7, 2022

Niwot High School senior Jessi Lehman clearly remembers her experience as a trumpet player in middle school. "There were definitely a lot more boys in the trumpet section," Lehman said, "Pesky middle school boys. And being one of only two girls, I always had a feeling they didn't really think I should be there." But the stereotypical attitude regarding musical instruments and gender that once dominated the music scene did not have a negative effect on the senior's desire to pursue her interests....

They played well together as a team in the field, and showed up at the plate, with a collective batting average of .310. Second baseman Zoe Chociej continued her strong performance, going 3 for 3...
