Niwot falls to 3-4 on the season after a 28-7 loss

Niwot High School squared off against George Washington High School for the seventh game of the season. Going into the game with a record of 3-3, the Cougars were looking for a win to put them over the .500 mark.

The ball did not fall their way, however, as they lost to George Washington 28-7. Even though the score was lopsided, the game was still great to watch. Niwot sophomore running back Charlie Shaw replaced Chad Volf as quarterback due to Volf's recent injury. Volf had started every game for the Cougars, but was injured late in the game against Frederick. Niwot can still make the playoffs, so the players are keeping hope alive.

Niwot started the game with the ball, putting together a 10-play drive before turning it over on an incomplete pass on fourth down. George Washington answered with a six-play drive that resulted in a 7-yard touchdown run putting them up 7-0. The Cougars answered back with a sustained drive that wrapped up as Jesus Rosas scored on a two-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7.

To start the second quarter George Washington began with a drive of their own, scoring on an 11-yard passing touchdown. Niwot struggled to answer back on their own drive but failed to convert on a fourth-down conversion. George Washington took no time putting a drive together as they converted on another 11-yard touchdown pass to take a 21-7 lead. Niwot went 3-and-out on their following drive, punting the ball just before the half ended.

Niwot's defense battled on the opening drive of the second half, but George Washington's 12-play drive ultimately put the ball in the end zone, making the score 28-7. This time around, the Cougars got six plays off on their drive but still failed to convert on fourth down. On George Washington's following drive the Cougars were able to stop them forcing a four-and-out at the end of the quarter.

The Cougars didn't do much when they got the ball back, however, as they went 3-and-out and punted the ball back to George Washington. George Washington put together an 11-play drive but had to punt the ball on the 12th play. Niwot got the ball back, but couldn't gain traction as the drive ended after six plays. George Washington got the ball back and knelt twice to seal the win.

Niwot's next game is at Everly Montgomery Field where they play Mead High School on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. This will also be senior night, and the last game of the regular season.
