Niwot moves to 3-3 after loss to Fredrick

The Niwot football team traveled to Fredrick on Friday for the sixth game of the season, but came home with a 49-0 loss, moving to 3 and 3 on the season. Although they have struggled over the past two weeks, the Cougars haven't faltered from their game plan, staying true to what they want to do this season.

Niwot started the game off with the ball, but after driving it to the 30 yard-line, failed to convert on a fourth down pass. Frederick scored in only two plays with a 50-yard rushing touchdown putting the score at 6-0 after they missed on a PAT.

The next drive did not go as well for Niwot as they went three-and-out in their own territory, giving Frederick the ball at the 40 yard-line. Frederick took only one play to score this time, passing it 40 yards and getting into the end zone, making the score 13-0 early in the game.

Niwot almost put a scoring drive together on the next possession, but fumbled on a run and pitch giving Frederick the ball inside their own 20 yard-line. The first quarter ended when Niwot stopped Frederick after four plays, giving the Cougars the ball back to start the second quarter.

Niwot's second-quarter drive came to an abrupt end after a fumble was returned for a touchdown putting Frederick up 21-0 after a successful 2-point conversion.

Niwot then put together a 6-play drive but didn't get much out of those six plays as they punted it on the seventh play. Frederick came back with their own six-play drive, scoring on a 17-yard pass. The extra point made the score 28 to 0.

On the third play of Niwot's next drive, the Cougars fumbled on a strip sack. After recovering the ball, the Cougars were forced to punt the ball back to Frederick. Frederick scored on the first play of their drive with a 40-yard rushing touchdown putting them up 35 to 0.

Cougar quarterback Chad Volf did not re-enter the game on the next possession, which was the first time that he wasn't in during an offensive varsity snap this season. Volf had apparently been injured on the last offensive play, and his younger brother, Wyatt Volf, took his spot at quarterback. The drive ended as the half ran out.

Frederick started out the second half with a 64-yard passing touchdown that gave them a big enough lead to result in a running clock. Niwot started to experiment with quarterbacks during the next drive as they put in running back Jesus Rosas at QB. While it didn't result in a score, Niwot's offense definitely gained momentum.

Frederick then put together a long drive and scored on a 12-yard rushing touchdown, putting them up 49-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Niwot's first drive of the fourth quarter saw junior running back Mikey D'Apolito at quarterback, who took off on a 30-yard run, putting Niwot and the ball at midfield. The Cougars couldn't push the ball much further, going three-and-out on the next set of downs, giving Frederick the ball back. Frederick ran down the clock, ending the game at 49-0 with a Niwot loss.

Niwot's next game is at Everly Montgomery Field as they play George Washington High School on Oct. 13th at 4 p.m.
