  • Sheriff Pelle named Niwot's 4th of July parade Grand Marshal

    Vicky Dorvee|Jun 29, 2022

Nothing conjures up a deeper sense of patriotism and belonging to a community like a 4th of July parade, and Niwot's celebration has a way of elevating that hometown, apple pie feeling to the max. There are kids riding their streamer-adorned bikes, horse-mounted riders carrying flags, well-represented community organizations walking with their banners, all encased in a backdrop of majestic music. And of course there's the Grand Marshal riding in a spiffy convertible smiling and waving to the...

    Leigh Suskin|Jun 29, 2022

The Fourth of July Parade in Niwot is always a joyous and lighthearted celebration of the birth of our nation. This year, slight changes to the lineup area (now on Meadowdale Drive) suggest an even better and more organized approach to the parade, which starts at 11 a.m. and will head west on Niwot road, then northwest on 2nd Avenue, ending at Murray Street. Parade Grand Marshal Sheriff Joe Pelle and his wife, Stephanie, will host an exciting lineup this year, starting with the Honor Guard, Boy...

  • The Story Behind the Name: Fire House Museum

    Leigh Suskin and Kathy Trauner|Jun 29, 2022

With the Fourth of July fast approaching, it seems a fortuitous time to talk about the history of the Niwot firehouse. In 1910, concern about fire protection prompted Niwot citizens to acquire a firehose handcart and build a simple frame shed to house it. The firehouse was erected close to the street, on an undeveloped lot between the Niwot State Bank (now Porchfront Homes) and the Livingston Hotel (now Wise Buys Antiques) on Second Avenue. It was a simple 8' x 14' wooden frame structure with...

  • Niwot mural artist Danielle SeeWalker

    Vicky Dorvee|Jun 29, 2022

This is the first in a series of stories on the four artists painting walls in the Cottonwood Shopping Center-Jerry Sinor Building mural project. Artist, activist and author Danielle SeeWalker's mural is striking, colorful, compelling, and nearly the size of a standard billboard. It took SeeWalker four full days in 90+ degree heat, and additional hours here and there to complete the 495 square-foot mural she's named "What Once Was." It beautifies the southern exterior wall of Abo's Pizza, next...

  • Left Hand Laurel - Karen Quinn

    Maria Karagianis|Jun 29, 2022

Karen Quinn is kind. She is also modest, so she probably will not like being described in this way. A passionate gardener, talented photographer and deeply spiritual long-time resident of Niwot, Quinn also, by giving of herself and her talents, recently raised $1,600 for Ukrainians. We are sitting outside on a recent warm and sunny day on her patio, overlooking colorful gardens, alive with lupines and peonies and iris. Quinn is sharing her story over cups of tea and tasty homemade pumpkin...

  • Regenerative Agriculture

    Kathy Trauner|Jun 29, 2022

Editor’s note: This is the second of a two-part series. Last week’s article was Organic - Does it Matter? The Natural Resources Defense Council offers a simple definition of regenerative agriculture: “farming and ranching in harmony with nature.” The tenets of regenerative agriculture vary slightly from source to source. The following are, coincidentally, from the General Mills website: • Minimize disturbance; This means reduce or avoid tillage and chemicals • Maximize diversity (plants and animals) • Keep the soil covered year-round; t...

  • Local Musician of the Week: Kristin Henry

    Hannah Stewart|Jun 29, 2022

Kristin Henry is a character. She's enthusiastic and excited to talk about everything from music to musicals, to her new favorite movie (Everything Everywhere All At Once). She sat down at a table for two in the Old Oak Coffeehouse, mug in hand and a smile on her face. Right away, she began talking about Boulder County and how excited she was to talk about music. Originally from Philadelphia, Henry was a classically trained singer who then moved to Colorado to attend graduate school at the...

  • Gardener's Guide

    Katrina Stroud|Jun 29, 2022

Garden lovers, assemble! This week’s eco-friendly topic is on pollinators, as June is National Pollinator Month. In recent news, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill into law to protect pollinators in Colorado. SB22-199 will require the executive director of the department of natural resources to conduct a study regarding the challenges native pollinators face. The law also requires the executive director to develop education and outreach programming to improve pollinator populations. There are more than 950 native species and 250 b...

  • The Galloping Geese Fly through Niwot

    Deborah Fowler|Jun 29, 2022

Niwot's Galloping Geese bike team was grateful for the cooler temperatures this past weekend as they completed the BikeMS Colorado. On June 25, they started in the early hours from Broomfield and cycled 68 miles, ending in Fort Collins where they were greeted with live music, cold beer and rest tents. The route brought them, and nearly 1,500 BikeMS riders, hurtling through Niwot between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. with a welcome rest stop at Niwot High School. The following day, they put in another 67...

  • Webster Claims Low-Am Title at Colorado Women's Open

    Sydney Rothstein|Jun 29, 2022

Years worth of hard work on and off the golf course paid off for local amateur golfer Kelsey Webster at the Colorado Women's Open at the beginning of June. Webster's history with the game of golf has had its fair share of ups and downs over that same time period, but her perseverance and positive attitude led her to a new victory recently. Webster, a Gunbarrel resident, grew up playing golf around the Boulder Country Club and attended Fairview High School where she played on the girl's golf...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Carly Toothaker

    Jack Carlough|Jun 29, 2022

One of the first gifts Carly Toothaker could remember receiving as a young child was a soccer ball, and after some time to reflect on her recently-completed high school career, that present can be considered an ember to a life encapsulated by sport. Toothaker's father became her first soccer coach, with her mother doing the same in basketball. The immense early guidance helped her become a multi-year varsity starter in both sports at Niwot High. In soccer, which she considers her primary sport,...

  • Skye's the limit

    Bruce Warren|Jun 29, 2022

When Skye Messinger was drafted in the 22nd round by the Chicago Cubs coming out of Niwot High School in 2017, he had a difficult decision to make – take the bonus money they were offering, or accept a scholarship to play Division I baseball at the University of Kansas. Messinger opted for the college experience, turning down the Cubs' offer to go to KU, where he had a solid career, albeit one interrupted by Covid-19. He reasoned that if he were good enough, he would have a chance to play p...
