    Aurelia Pollard, Editorial@lhvc.com|Oct 26, 2016

For all the dog lovers out there, Left Hand Animal Hospital in Niwot is putting on this year’s dog costume contest, after sponsoring it last year, following the Great Pumpkin Party parade on Saturday, Oct. 29. “Pat Murphy started it and she invited us to work with her two years ago,” owner Nancy Bureau said. “She agreed that [the hospital] could take over the pet costume portion and she’s still putting on the children’s parade.” The dog costume contest will begin after the parade, and in front...

  • Vote "Yes" on school ballot issues

    Bruce Warren, Editorial@lhvc.com|Oct 23, 2016

It’s a sad fact that Colorado is hamstrung by complicated provisions of the state constitution that prevent the state legislature from adequately funding public education, but fixing that problem is not on the ballot. As a result, local school districts are forced to turn to voters time and again to ask for bond issue approvals and mill levy overrides to keep pace with the demands of increasing populations and escalating costs. The St. Vrain Valley School District has proposed a bond issue (3A on the ballot) which would generate $260 million f...

After dispensing with various housekeeping matters, the committee heard first from Sarah Cioni, ow...

  • Reconciliation of the heart - part two

    Patti Ashley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Oct 22, 2016

“The shadow self seems to be the opposite of love. Actually it is the way to love.” Deepak Chopra My book Living in the Shadow of the Too-Good Mother Archetype explored the meaning of the shadow and addressed many of the unconscious beliefs held by mothers today. In my upcoming book Reconciliation of the Heart, I address the common shadow aspects that many of us, not just mothers, have still haunting us. In my personal and professional life I have witnessed many examples of ways that we car...

  • NCA discusses SVVSD bond measure

    Kim Glasscock, Editorial@lhvc.com|Oct 22, 2016

Niwot Community Association (NCA) board members agreed to continue the group’s policy of serving only as an information conduit for the Niwot/Gunbarrel community when St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) officials asked for the group’s endorsement of the district’s proposed mill levy increase on the November ballot. Although several board members expressed individual support for the measure and praised the school district’s student academic achievement and fiscal responsibility, the NCA board agreed that the NCA’s primary function...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Oct 22, 2016

Dear Editor: Did you know: * The Twin Lakes Action Group (TLAG) has offered three alternate locations for the proposed development that are closer to bus stops, stores and services. The proposed site at the Twin Lakes has the City’s lowest possible score for walkability—hardly the best place for 280 urban-density apartments. * Even the Housing Authority’s own flawed habitat study shows the fields to be the SOLE wildlife corridor linking the Twin Lakes to Walden Ponds. The biologist even discovered meadowlarks and mallards nesting in the tallg...

Who Owns the Canaries? Let’s say that you have a product you’d like to sell. What’s one of the best marketing tricks you could pull off? It would be to convince people that you were simply offering your product for sale out of the goodness of your heart to benefit them, not because you wanted to – oh, the horror! – make money. Such is the achievement of the organic industry. And while fooling the general population about their supposedly pure motivations is one thing, we should be very concerned when our policy-makers are too naive to recogn...

  • Costumes, candy & fun

    Aurelia Pollard, Editorial@lhvc.com|Oct 19, 2016

Halloween is the one day of the year children and adults can be anything or anyone else they want to be. Niwot has embraced this holiday for over two decades by hosting the Great Pumpkin Party, giving families the opportunity to dress up and walk in a parade; children can trick or treat at local businesses, take hayrides and visit a petting zoo. Pat Murphy of Niwot Real Estate has been organizing this event, put on by the Niwot Business Association, for nearly 25 years. Since its beginning as a...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Oct 18, 2016

Dear Editor, I found the Courier online poll chart in last week’s paper to be very misleading. Close to 1,700 people from Gunbarrel and the surrounding areas have signed the Twin Lakes Action Group (TLAG) petition opposing upzoning to medium density on the Twin Lakes parcels. Therefore, I was surprised to find that 72.7 percent of those who filled out the online LHVC poll were for this development, until I found out that only 32 people filled out the online poll. This omission of the very small sample size gives the impression that the m...

The goal was learning to debate appropriately while also practicing the art of listening and formulating persuasive arguments. Topics were chosen that would be less emotionally charged than others, while still giving students the chance to formulate and defend a constructive argument about a...

  • BVSD ballot measure 3A to fund maintenance and more

    Jennifer Simms, Editorial@lhvc.com|Oct 15, 2016

In November, Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) will be asking voters to approve an operational mill levy, ballot measure 3A. Though the ballot language states the levy would support the district’s ongoing construction, technology and maintenance expenses, the school district envisions it as a way to provide for much more. Since the State of Colorado began cutting education spending during the recession in 2009-2010, using a legislative maneuver called the negative factor, BVSD’s funding has...

  • A forklift might be necessary

    Nellie Nibnose, Editorial@lhvc.com|Oct 15, 2016

After spying the excellent work being done by Elaine Fein on the left hand chair situated in front of KL Realty, I’ve learned that Anne Postle and Michelle Henzel of Osmosis Gallery and Architecture have ordered 11 more concrete chairs – eight are adult-size and three are the smaller kids’ chairs. Postle said that the southpaw chairs are available for purchase at the cost of $250 for an adult chair and $175 for a child’s. Buyers need to secure their own artist to decorate the chairs. On Oct. 5th, the Niwot Historical Society and President Kathy Koehler kicked off the 2016-17 Niwot: Now & Then lecture series with an examination of baseball and its impact on the town. From its earliest days, when Evart “Toots” Conilogue got together with his brothers and friends to form the Niwot Farmers; to the modern era, when Coach Bob Bote led the Niwot High Cougars to five state championships in eight years, the national pastime has been an integral part of Niwot’s civic identity. In Ba...

The speed limit dropped from 50 mph to 40 mph to ensure citizens remain safe when entering the road, according to Boulder County. “They were concerned about speeding overall but more specifically with ‘close calls’ that they had with drivers moving well over the speed limit, similar to complaints we received last year...

Boulder County Commissioners held a public hearing on Tuesday, September 27 to make their decision on the land-use change request for Twin Lakes, which would open the doors for affordable housing to be built. The commissioner’s hearing followed the Boulder County Planning Commission’s vote, which ended in a 4-3 approval of the land-use request. The change would allow the land use designation to become mixed density residential on the 20 acres of land next to Twin Lakes in Gunbarrel. Even though the county commissioners took their time on del...

  • No NCA candidate forum

    Kim Glasscock, Editorial@lhvc.com|Sep 30, 2016

The Niwot Community Association (NCA) has been stymied in its efforts to host a debate among Boulder County Commissioner candidates. Schedules for the candidates were already filled, Kim Hawksworth, NCA events chairperson, explained. “We found a few dates that we hoped would fit into the candidates’ schedules and the Left Hand Grange’s open dates, but as we contacted the incumbents and the challengers we heard that those dates were already booked,” Hawksworth said. “The alternate dates also had conflicts. So the NCA board decided to concentra...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Sep 22, 2016

Before I comment on Charles Bell’s letter, I would like to give thanks to Don Sherwood. You were right on with each paragraph. Thank you! Mr. Bell, your comment stating that you “didn’t feel proud of my community” is highly offensive. First of all, this is not “your community.” If you aren’t proud of Niwot and the residents that live here and are fighting to keep marijuana out of Niwot, then I suggest you move yourself and business out of town. I’m sure Boulder would welcome you. Second, for the parents and children who were in the picket line...

    Patti Ashley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Sep 1, 2016

“I'm so tired of living this life. Fooling myself, believing we're right, when I've never given love with any conviction of the heart.” Kenny Loggins Songwriters, poets, authors and artists often express themselves from a place of heart. We tend to look upon works of art with awe, curiosity and mystery. Some things are simply beyond words. We call this the heart. We listen to the heart from a different place than our ears. We feel with the heart. We know when something feels congruent, yet we...
