    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Aug 24, 2017

Niwot gymnastics head coach Marisa Purcell believes she has all of the pieces in place for another serious run at this year’s Class 4A state title. With three proven all-around performers and a crop of talented newcomers, the Cougars should once again be in the mix come state competition in November. But as the coach of a very diverse group of perfectionist athletes, Purcell knows the road back to state championship glory depends on more than just individual talent and hard work. Leading the c...

Then a former running coach suggested she take a look at North...

  • Niwot girls take 2nd at state track

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|May 24, 2017

It’s no secret that the Niwot girls track team had its sights set on another state title this year. After a dispiriting third-place finish in 2016 following three successive state championships, this year’s squad buckled down, putting in months of grueling workouts, determined to regain the team’s customary place on top of the championship podium. As they cruised through the 2017 regular season, capturing one meet title after another with machine-like precision, the slip-ups that doomed their...

On Feb. 1, she made it official, signing a national letter of intent with UNC. “The coach wanted me early on,” Barkow said in explaining her choice. “He believed in me after I tore my ACL during my sophomore year.” Barkow gave veteran UNC coach Tim Barrera her verbal commitment while recovering from the injury two years ago, and nev...

Then, on Saturday, she captured her fourth consecutive Northern League diving title. For head swim coach Sarah Stamp, competitors like Barkow, who was also a member of Niwot’s gymnastics team, don’t come along too often. “Three-sport athletes who are so good in all three sports are hard to come by,” she said. “Maddie winning t...

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Dec 1, 2016

Despite a 25th-place finish at last year’s Class 4A State Championship meet, Niwot girls swimming head coach Sarah Stamp doesn’t think her team is in a rebuilding mode. “If you look at our season last year, we placed in the top five at invites and won most of our duals,” she said. “We had a lot of strong swimmers, just not enough to get us to that top ten placement at state,” Coach Stamp, however, is optimistic that this year she has the depth that will help her team down the stretch. “O...

In the Niwot gymnastics team’s second to last meet in the regular season, it was able to beat out Thompson Valley for another win. Head Coach Marisa Purcell said the meet was great overall, even though the scores were lower, partially because neither team competed on vault. “Even though the score was lower, we had a lot of improvements on floor from working on jumps,” Purcell said. “Overall it looked better - that was really an improvement. Thompson valley tends to be a quick and quieter meet because it’s such a small gym.” Purcell said the gi...

On Tuesday, Sept. 6 the Cougars went up against Loveland and came away with a win, 174.3 to 133.125. Head Coach Marisa Purcell said the girls progressed in their routines for the meet and competing at Niwot helped boost the team’s confidence. “I think we had some improvement on bars,” Purcell said of the meet, “cleaning up the routine a little bit.
