A third generation Coloradoan, I was born in Longmont and grew up in Southmoor Park where my parents (Courier carriers Otto and Arlene Ahlgrim) reside today. Graduating from Niwot High School in the 1980s, I saw Niwot as a sleepy farming community with a few subdivisions housing mostly IBM employees. In November of 1980, I was hired at the only law firm in town, the Law Office of Bruce W. Warren, and have been fortunate enough that even though the firm has evolved to Warren, Carlson & Moore,...

One of the functions of our local community journalism is to report on governmental actions which may impact the Niwot and Gunbarrel communities. The Left Hand Valley Courier regularly monitors Boulder County government meeting schedules and agendas, and as a result, learned of a meeting among Boulder County Commissioners and legislators that was described as “not open to members of the public.” Since such closed meetings are prohibited by Colorado law, the Left Hand Courier contacted the county commissioners’ office and the notice was changed....
Monte Comer was a kid with a lot of friends. He was a fixture on his baseball team in the Gunbarrel Lefthand Valley Recreation Association, or GLVRA as it was known (now Niwot Youth Sports). He had buddies on his basketball team, his Boy Scout troop, his class at Niwot Elementary School and everywhere else. “Back then I don’t think they had the Pee Wee Football they have now,” said Monte’s sister, Jamie Comer Smith. “I believe he would have played football.” That was the mid-1970’s,...

Glasha is a cheerful 2-year-old airedale terrier or, according to her owner, Elena Kazakova, 60 pounds of boundless energy. "Glasha is very active and needs a lot of exercise," Kazakova said. She added that finding outlets for all that energy can be a challenge, especially given Colorado's summer heat. "In the open space, even at 8 in the morning, she gets overheated very easily. I prefer any place she can step into a creek or lake." Enter Gunbarrel's Twin Lakes, and specifically, the...
This year, The Courier asked local residents and visitors to share what they are thankful for. Below are their responses; each of them notable in their own way. Equally wonderful was the process of gathering responses. Most of the research occurred in the town's coffee shops and at first, getting responses was slow and awkward. But the tipping point was when some customers overheard others answering and asked to join the conversation. Ultimately, responses and ensuing conversation were full of...

In the past year, there have only been three auto thefts in the Niwot area. “One was a trailer that was stolen out of the parking lot at the church on 95th Street,” Pelle said. “The trailer was recovered in Denver and there were no suspects…One automotive was a puffer: a truck that was running outside of Gunbarrel [Import] Motors. That car and the suspects were apprehended in Broomfield…And the third one was a vehicle stolen from the Niwot park-n-ri...

At approximately 2 p.m., fire crews and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the area. Fire crews requested air assistance due to the dry, hot weather and the proximity of the fire to homes in the area, including the Lake of the Pikes neighborhood. The 19-acre fire was on private land and has been contained. An Evacuation Warning was issued for the area. Mountain Ridge Drive, Lakeridge Trail, and H...

Since the birth of our nation, voting still remains a privilege. The Constitution itself denied voting rights for women and enslaved people. Jim Crow laws suppressed the vote in Black communities, and language barriers were exploited among immigrants. Constitutional amendments were passed to expand the right to vote, and legislation during the civil rights movement removed some barriers to voting. Even today, ballot drop boxes and polling places are located hundreds of miles away from Native American Reservations, and recent legislation in...

If you're raising some young baseball players, or just have a love of the game, you probably know Canar Field at the Niwot Youth Sports complex known as Hangge Fields at Monarch Park. It's the largest of the six fields, often used for "senior" players between 13 and 15 years old. Jason Canar of Longmont remembers when Canar Field was christened back in 1986, and the field still holds great meaning for him. "I'm incredibly proud, just to have it have that name," he said. Lately, wildfires burning in Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California, have made it nearly impossible to see the Rocky Mountains from the Niwot-Gunbarrel area, and the air quality is noticeably hazy. Luckily, there are some ways in which you can improve the air quality in your home: • The most obvious solution is to decorate your rooms with houseplants. NASA has revealed that houseplants can remove up to 87% of air toxins within 24 hours. Other research has shown that indoor plants improve concentration and productivity, reduce stress...

In July 2021, the Boulder City Council greenlighted the development of a 9.8-acre parcel of land near Celestial Seasonings in Gunbarrel, a long-time home to a large prairie dog colony. Over a year later, the first stage of the project is underway. The controversial development project, which will add 230 apartments, a cafe, library, art space, community areas, mobility hub, and green space to the land along Spine Road, has been a source of tension between Gunbarrel residents and the City of...

Among his many accomplishments at CU, he hired former head football coach Gary Barnett in 1996, oversaw a $42.6 million expansion to Folsom Field and developed a long-term plan for the athletic department. “I'm honored by it, humbl...
