  • Hoover leads Cougars to three top-10 finishes

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Aug 24, 2017

The Niwot boys golf team completed the Greeley swing of their season last week, playing four tournaments in five days in and around Colorado’s twelfth most populous city, coming away with three top-ten finishes. “I don’t want to say it was a grueling week,” said Cougar head coach Ed Weaver of his team’s early-season trek up north. “But there was a lot of golf.” The team kicked off the week with back-to-back tournaments at Highland Hills golf course on Aug. 14 & 15. At the Greeley West Invitati...

  • Severe weather shortens Niwot golf’s season opener

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Aug 16, 2017

The Colorado weather claimed an early victory in the 2017-2018 high school athletic season when heavy rain and lightning forced suspension of play in the Niwot boys golf team’s season-opening tournament at the Olde Course in Loveland on Aug 10. Niwot number one Jack Hoover was +4 through eight holes when play was stopped, with a birdie and two pars, but also five bogeys. Junior Andrew Elliott, Niwot’s number two golfer, started his round with three-straight double-bogeys, but parred two of his...

  • Young golf team looks to build on state tournament experience

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Aug 10, 2017

The good news for Niwot head golf coach Ed Weaver is that his 2017 boys team will feature two 2016 state tournament qualifiers in the top two spots and a sophomore with a year of high school golf under his belt at number three. The not-so-good news for Weaver is that after that, the Cougars will be “challenged with depth and experience,” according to Weaver. “I’ll have two juniors and some sophomores,” said Weaver, who admitted he’s not entirely certain how many players will be on his final r...

  • New NHS Boys Basketball Coach

    Bruce Warren, [email protected]|Aug 4, 2017

Eric Hejl (pronounced “Hail”) has been named the new Niwot High School boys basketball coach, replacing Preston Hardy, who resigned in June for family reasons, including a new baby on the way and club team coaching responsibilities. Hejl, a varsity assistant under Hardy last year and the freshman coach two years ago, will assume the reigns on a one-year interim basis, according to Athletic Director Chase McBride. Hejl works at Lake Valley Golf Course as a PGA apprentice and assistant pro when he is not coaching basketball. He grew up in Ran...

  • Standout Niwot athletes to sign at next level

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Jun 1, 2017

Jenna McCaffrey When Niwot senior distance runner Jenna McCaffrey started weighing her post-high school options last year, Arizona was the furthest place from her mind. “I was never really looking into going to school in Arizona, because it’s so hot there,” she said. Instead, the four-year member of both the cross country and track teams at Niwot looked into options closer to home, including Colorado School of Mines and CSU. Then a former running coach suggested she take a look at North...

  • Girls Golf: Cougars face uphill climb back to Northern League contention

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Mar 9, 2017

Niwot head golf coach Ed Weaver is clear about the challenges the Niwot girls golf team faces this season. “It’s truly in a rebuilding year,” he said. In 2016, the Cougars placed third at the 4A Northern Regional, and were just two strokes away from qualifying for state as a team. But both of last year’s state qualifiers graduated, and this year’s projected number-one, junior Rosie Setter, suffered an ACL-tear during a basketball game in January, and will miss the entire golf season. Weaver hims...

HOCKEY One of the country’s top collegiate hockey players, Andrew Sturtz of Penn State, is the nephew of Niwot residents Brad and Jane Langdon. Sturtz is from Buffalo, NY, and is currently a sophomore forward for the Nittany Lions. As a freshman, he led the team in goals with 18, which was the fifth-most in the country by a freshman. The performance earned him the freshman of the year award. His first goal for Penn State was named the NCAA’s No. 1 Play of the Week on Oct. 23, 2015, coming agains...

  • Boys Golf: Niwot finishes second at 4A Northern regionals; team qualifies for state

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Oct 2, 2016

Coach Ed Weaver is “ecstatic” about his team’s second-place finish at the 4A regional tournament in Greeley, but not especially shocked. “No, it’s not really a surprise,” he said. “I always knew they had the capability.” The key, he says, was convincing his players of their potential. To do that, Weaver said he used a statistics-based approach to show his players how they match up against their competitors. “I just had to gather the data and analyze it,” he explained. “It helped them see they...

  • Both Niwot cross country teams take first at RE-1J District Meet

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Sep 25, 2016

Even before the season began, Coach Kelly Christensen knew his team was capable of a breakout performance at the RE-1J District Meet. Held at Sunset Golf Course in Longmont, the meet is limited to schools in St. Vrain Valley, and serves as a quasi-district championship. So Christensen made sure his runners were prepared mentally as well as physically. “We didn’t really change our training regimen last week, but we did bump up the intensity psychologically,” he explained. It was a tactic that...

  • Niwot cross country: Talented runners and storied history drive new coach’s expectations

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Aug 28, 2016

By most measures, 2015 was an atypical year for Niwot High School's cross country program. Despite some strong individual performances, both the boys and girls teams finished well out of championship contention at last year’s 4A State meet. But for new head coach Kelly Christensen, last year’s results don’t mean much. “There are a lot of talented runners on this team,” said Christensen, “A top three to five finish at state this year is very achievable.” Christensen is certainly no stranger to t...

  • Niwot Boys Golf places 4th at Northern League season opener

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Aug 22, 2016

The Niwot boys golf team opened its 2016 season with a strong showing at the Northern League’s first official match, which was held August 11 at the 72-par Olde Course in Loveland. Led by senior Jake Butler, the Cougars took fourth place in the nine-team tournament, just three strokes behind surprise third-place finisher Northridge. Last year’s top teams, Silver Creek and Thompson Valley, finished first and second respectively, picking up just where they left off in 2015. Butler, a senior who...

  • Niwot boys golf preview

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Aug 14, 2016

There won’t be a lot of familiar faces on the Cougars boys golf team this season, but Head Coach Ed Weaver, is taking it all in stride. “We lost six players to graduation… We are clearly in a rebuilding mode,” he mused. Weaver, entering his second season as Niwot’s coach, will be juggling both youth and inexperience on this year’s squad. Five brand new players will be playing on the team this season, including three freshmen, making Niwot among the youngest teams in the Northern League. Neverthe...

  • NHS boys golf coach runs to raise funds

    Aurelia Pollard, [email protected]|Jun 3, 2016

The Niwot Cougar boys head golf coach Ed Weaver, is running a half marathon to raise money for the golf team. Weaver said this came about because a friend of his, who has run many half marathons, held him to an offer Weaver had made last year that he would run a half marathon with him. “Back in 2013, one of my best friends from high school, “Big Al,” made a commitment to walk a half marathon (13.1 miles) in every state of the U.S.,” Weaver explained. “When I heard this, I offered (half serious / half joking), ‘tell me when you come to Colorado...
