  • Cougars top Northridge 8-7

    Bruce Warren|Apr 20, 2022

A double play sealed a come-from-behind victory for Niwot over Northridge April 19, with the Cougars posting a hard-fought 8-7 win. Niwot took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a four-run rally to put the Cougars on top by a run. Northridge got the tying run to second base with no outs, but a heads-up play by first baseman Jack Brooker on a bunt retired the runner at third base as Brooker fired to third-baseman Spencer Olson who applied the tag for the first out. With a runner on...

  • Niwot baseball posts blowout win

    Bruce Warren|Apr 13, 2022

Gale-force winds helped propel the Niwot Cougars to their first victory of the season April 7 with a 21-3 win over Berthoud. Coach Ken Rosales, in his first season at the helm, picked up his first victory after seven losses, several of the heart-wrenching variety (10-9, 1-0, and 6-5). But after a slow start in the first inning against Berthoud, which ended with the Cougars down 1-0, the bats came to life and Niwot, with the help of eight Berthoud errors, scored seven, six and eight runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings, respectively. Overall...

  • Niwot baseball falls in opener

    Jocelyn Rowley|Mar 16, 2022

The Ken Rosales era of Niwot baseball got off to a delayed start, as last week's wintry weather postponed the Cougars' original opening day, scheduled for March 10. So the boys in green got underway on March 12 instead, on the road against cross-town rival Skyline. Alas, future memories of the Rosales era at Niwot will not include a win in the storied coach's debut, as the Cougars went on to drop the opener 10-9. Worse still, it was on a walkoff single with two outs, giving Niwot no chance to...

  • Senior-heavy Cougars baseball team welcomes new coach in 2022

    Bruce Warren|Mar 9, 2022

With seven seniors, new head coach Ken Rosales has a strong core to build upon in his first season in charge of the storied NHS baseball program, which has five 4A state championships to its credit, though none more recent than 2005. Rosales, a school resource officer at Niwot High, has worked with the Boulder County Sheriff's Department for 21 years, and was head baseball coach at Lyons High School for eight years, where his teams made the state tournament four times. He first got into...

  • Kenneth Rosales named new Niwot baseball head coach

    Jack Carlough|Oct 20, 2021

Former Lyons head coach Kenneth Rosales is the new leader atop Niwot baseball. Rosales brings his unique coaching journey to Niwot in hopes of restoring the program's previous glory. NHS athletic director Joe Brown announced the hiring in late September after four-year head coach Adam Strah resigned in June. During his eight seasons leading Lyons, Rosales brought the Lions to four state tournament appearances. He was also an assistant coach there for four seasons prior to taking over the...

  • Seniors close out careers for Niwot baseball

    Jack Carlough|Jun 16, 2021

It's not every year that a Niwot varsity baseball roster will include 10 seniors. Following a COVID-19 stolen junior season, the Cougars' crowded senior class led Niwot to a 5-10 record, the program's most wins since 2017. In their final four games together, Niwot cruised to a 3-1 record highlighted by a 16-7 win at Silver Creek on June 8 for the first time since 2016. The Cougar season ended at home with an 11-4 loss to the Class 4A eighth-ranked Windsor Wizards on June 10. Head Coach Adam...

  • Niwot baseball's versatile offense producing wins

    Jack Carlough|Jun 9, 2021

The Niwot baseball team won back-to-back games for the first time in 2021 after taking down Skyline on June 3 and Centaurus on June 5. Now sitting at 4-9, Head Coach Adam Strah said his team hasn't panicked despite its record. A postseason appearance may be unlikely but Niwot has found its groove in the season's waning stretch. "I would say they just have kept pushing forward and a little bit of that is paying off now," Strah said. Following a 5-3 loss at Riverdale Ridge on June 1, the Cougars...

  • Hayden Morford, Micah Sheats guide Cougars on the hill

    Jack Carlough|May 26, 2021

Led by senior pitchers Hayden Morford and Micah Sheats, the 2-7 Niwot baseball team kept its opponents quiet during a 1-2 week on the diamond. Following a 10-4 loss at Fort Morgan on May 19, Niwot returned home to face Severance on May 20. Morford, making his first start of the season, allowed two runs in six and one-third innings against the Silver Knights. His brilliant effort wasn't enough, however, as the Cougars couldn't get any offense going behind their southpaw starter and lost, 4-0....

  • Cougars nab first win

    Jack Carlough|May 19, 2021

Another busy week concluded for the Niwot baseball team which secured its first win of the season on May 12 at Northridge. Niwot wasn't able to keep the momentum going and fell to Mountain View on May 13 and Frederick on May 15. The Cougars now sit at 1-5 and have just 10 games remaining to make up some ground in the 4A/3A Longs Peak League. Senior Dylan Olson toed the rubber at Darryl Kile Field in Greeley against Northridge. He allowed two unearned runs in three and two-thirds innings and was...

  • Niwot baseball returns to the diamond

    Jack Carlough|May 12, 2021

Following an over two-year wait, the Niwot baseball team began its 2021 campaign with three games in three days. Although Niwot went winless, the Cougars possess a core of improving talent. Niwot's opener came on May 6 at Severance. After Niwot scored five runs in the top half of the third inning, Severance regained the lead with seven in the bottom half and held on for a 10-7 victory. Senior Micah Sheats got the start on the mound and was pulled during the rough third inning. Offensively,...
