  • A library in Gunbarrel or Niwot?

    Katrina Stroud|Mar 16, 2022

The pandemic has been a devastating time within our personal lives and within our local and national governmental operations. Now that life is returning to "normal," the Boulder Library Champions, a grassroots group of local volunteers, are interested in making some changes to the way the Boulder public library operates. They're also in need of book donations, in case you're interested in contributing to the group. On March 8, the Boulder Library Champions held a community meeting at the Left...

  • Niwot Market celebrates 20 years 'in a really great town'

    Mary Wolbach Lopert|Mar 16, 2022

Bert Steele of Niwot Market was a bit flabbergasted by friends and patrons with a surprise party in honor of the market's 20th anniversary. Joined by his son Seth, while new mom daughter Alison missed the party, Steele thought there was an emergency at the store when he was called from his meal to return to the store Saturday afternoon. Complete with cake and champagne, Steele toasted all who were there by saying," This is a great town and we're really happy to be here." All of Niwot is "really...

  • Questions arise about future of Niwot Post Office

    Jocelyn Rowley|Mar 16, 2022

Amid staff shortages and unexpected closures, rumors have swirled around town that the Niwot branch of the U.S. Postal Service could be slated to close, as the 230-year-old agency undergoes major reform. In a 10-year plan released in May 2021, commissioner Louis DeJoy outlined steps to bring the financially troubled USPS back into profitability that include, among many, an effort to "consolidate low-traffic stations and branches." On March 8, that plan got a big boost with the U.S. Senate's...

  • Familiar Face - Kelly Paquette

    Bruce Warren|Mar 16, 2022

If you've dined at Raza Fresa in Niwot (or Ajuua! as it was formerly known) during the last 17 years, chances are good that you've been served by Kelly Paquette. Paquette began her career in the food service industry as manager of a Burger Chef restaurant. "It was my first job out of high school," the Platteville, Colo. native said. "When I had children, it became too many hours." Paquette then began a 12-year stint as a waitress at Colacci's, an Italian restaurant in Longmont. After the...

  • The Story Behind the Place(s) - Dodd Water Treatment Plant and Dodd Reservoir

    Bruce Warren|Mar 16, 2022

The Dodd Water Treatment Plant of the Left Hand Water District and Dodd Reservoir are named in honor of the Dodd family, which has contributed much to the history and development of the Niwot area. Alva M. Dodd came to the Niwot area in the 1860s, and married Della Gould, a member of the pioneering Gould family. They had 10 children, nine of whom remained in the area after they became adults. One son, Hugh Dodd, lived in the small house on the northwest corner of the intersection of Niwot Road...

  • Inspirational reads for Women's History month

    Katrina Stroud|Mar 16, 2022

March is Women's History Month. March is when women of all races, economic standings, religions, and sexual and gender orientations are celebrated for their hardships and victories in promoting equality and equity for all. It is hard not to be inspired by all the women who persisted under on-going threats of hate crimes and domestic terrorism. If you're interested in reading any feminist literature this month, here's a list of my personal favorites. First up, is one of pop-culture's favorite...

    Deborah Cameron|Mar 16, 2022

Months after the Marshall Fire, many of those impacted are still coping with what happened. Area students, fundraising through schools and in conjunction with Niwot businesses, have been doing what they can to offer support. Some of the major efforts happening currently are centered around school community groups. At Niwot High School, senior Mercer Stauch, President of National Honor Society and a full IB program candidate, is working with a team of Honor Society members on a classroom coin dri...

  • Arts Student of the Week-Ava Pres

    Jocelyn Rowley|Mar 16, 2022

Niwot sophomore Ava Pres started playing the cello as a sixth-grader at Sunset Middle, but long before that, the instrument became a source of fascination to her, thanks to some sibling rivalry. "When I was really little, my brother started playing the cello," she said. "It was really funny, because I wasn't allowed to touch the cello that he played, so I was always really curious what it sounded like and what it would be like to play." Her brother's cello career didn't last, but Pres has made...

  • Niwot baseball falls in opener

    Jocelyn Rowley|Mar 16, 2022

The Ken Rosales era of Niwot baseball got off to a delayed start, as last week's wintry weather postponed the Cougars' original opening day, scheduled for March 10. So the boys in green got underway on March 12 instead, on the road against cross-town rival Skyline. Alas, future memories of the Rosales era at Niwot will not include a win in the storied coach's debut, as the Cougars went on to drop the opener 10-9. Worse still, it was on a walkoff single with two outs, giving Niwot no chance to...

  • Student Athlete of the Week-Walt Van Riper

    Bruce Warren|Mar 16, 2022

When the Niwot Cougar baseball team took the field for the first time March 12, senior Walt Van Riper was on the mound. Van Riper went four innings in the opening 10-9 loss to Skyline in a non-league game, but was not involved in the decision. At the plate he had two hits in four plate appearances, scoring twice and driving in a run. The versatile Van Riper, who also started as a guard on the Cougar basketball team, is in his third season with the varsity squad, which boasts seven seniors. His...

    Jocelyn Rowley|Mar 16, 2022

The 2022 track and field season officially got underway for Niwot on March 12 at the annual RE-1J meet between St. Vrain Valley district schools. This year the action was out at Mead High, and, as has been the case for many years, the Cougars turned in another dominating performance. While that's come to be expected by 12th-year head coach Maurice Henriques, the season opener still held a few pleasant surprises, he said. "I'm just really impressed with the young kids. We have a lot of new faces,...

  • Niwot girls golf preview: small but talented team eyes return to state

    Jocelyn Rowley|Mar 16, 2022

What the 2022 Niwot girls golf team lacks in size it more than makes up for in talent, and the tight-knit group should be a force to reckon in the postseason, sixth-year golf coach Ed Weaver said. Led by three-time state qualifier Sydney Rothstein, the six-member team features a balance of returning talent, plus some "exciting" new players who will add depth and give the team a competitive edge. "Last year I had a senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman, at the state tournament," Weaver said. "S...
