Some may see broken boxes, empty water bottles and cut up rubber bands as trash, but not Sara Hopp’s 8th grade science students—they see musical instruments. Hopp’s classes recently finished up their sound waves unit by building musical instruments created out of recyclable materials. Working in groups, the students had to choose a country or region their musical instrument would likely come from—such as Mexico, India or Eastern Europe. They worked together, researched and narrowed it down to...

Milestone Medical, a division of Longmont United Hospital with offices at 6800 N. 79th Street in Cottonwood Square in Niwot, is continuing services for patients although Dr. Eric Hernandez and Dr. Jennifer Johnson are no longer with Longmont United Hospital. Though there is no family practitioner in place at this time, Longmont United Vice President of Operations Peter Powers said that people can still get most of the same services at the Niwot location. “Currently we have a nurse practitioner there that still sees patients as normal,” Pow...
There are two main places to shop and eat in Niwot, but if you’re not familiar with the town you might just miss one of them. Property owners Anne and Jim Postle have a solution to connect these areas, Cottonwood Square and Old Town, which is the Link Building on the corner of Niwot Road and 79th Street. On Wednesday, Feb. 17, the Boulder County Planning Commission held a public hearing to hear from the staff, property owners and the public about the proposal, and to make a recommendation to the county commissioners. Both Anne and Jim Postle w...
Gunbarrel Optometry is moving into more eye care while still providing the same services it has for the last 23 years. Under the new ownership of Philip Wren, the office has seen some new faces and other changes since April of last year. “It’s been going really well,” Wren said. “We’ve had good reception from the existing base and we’ve been working on gaining new patients. It’s been a good transition.” Office Manager Nikki Pattermann is one of the many new faces customers will see clearly once they get their new glasses or contact lenses....
The second annual Let’s Wine About Winter event, went off without a hitch last Saturday, Feb. 20. But if you attended last year’s event, you noticed one very stark difference—the weather. A blizzard accompanied last year’s inaugural event, which still has people talking about to this day. Many were hoping another blizzard would roll in just in time, but Mother Nature had other plans. It was a balmy day for winter, about 65 degrees, sunny and just a tad windy. One event goer said it was more like, “Let’s Wine About Wind,” than winter. But p...
The final two games for the Niwot High School girls basketball team were extremely important for their postseason hopes to come to fruition. They entered the week with a 13-8 record and a 5-7 record in the Northern conference. Unfortunately they dropped both games in their final week, one to Centaurus 57-34 and the final game to Northridge 43-36. After the loss to Centaurus, Niwot Head Coach Terri Ward knew that her team’s playoff aspirations had all but come to an end. “Bottom line, we had to win these last two games to have a shot,” Ward...
The last few weeks were not what the Niwot High School boys basketball team had hoped they would be. Entering the final stretch of the season it was a long shot for the Cougars to make the playoffs, but if they had been able to take care of business and let the chips fall as they would, they would have had a slim shot at seeing the post season. Niwot was not able to do that though, as they ended their season on a five-game losing streak. The most recent losses last week to Centaurus, 50-45, and Northridge, 66-63, were especially hard to...
It was a familiar sight for junior Tommy Stager of the Niwot High School wrestling team, being at the Colorado State Wrestling Tournament for the third time in his career. Unlike the last few times though, Stager had some company to share the experience with. Sophomore Alex Gazdik also qualified for the tournament for the first time in his short wrestling career. They both fought hard in the three days of events at the Pepsi Center, but ultimately it was Stager who finished in the top three. Cougar Head Coach Bobby Matthews said this was a...
Once kids reach high school, it’s usually time for them to get their first summer job, which has become increasingly harder to find. The Boulder County Summer Youth Corps program offers jobs to students ages 14-17 who are looking for a different and unique summer job. Beginning in 1996, the Youth Corps was created to address the problem of very few jobs for students. It focuses on hiring first-time workers, many just 14 and 15 years-old. Program Manager Judy Wolf said the eight-week summer p...
Recent construction projects seem to have no end in sight, which is why many people are wary when they hear of a future construction project in their neighborhood. That’s why Boulder County Transportation (BCT) held an open house meeting at the Left Hand Grange on Wednesday, Feb. 10, to discuss two upcoming projects with the Niwot community. Over 20 people filtered into the Grange to hear about two projects—one a culvert replacement at North 83rd Street and Dry Creek Road, and the other, reconstruction of both 83rd Street and Neva Road. The...

The 2016 edition of Niwot’s “Let’s Wine About Winter” is set from 1 to 5 p.m. on February 20, and a limited number of tickets are still available. It began last year when the idea was brought back to Colorado from a similar event in Chicago. “It seemed like such a great idea,” one of the many organizers Anne Postle said. “It’s an event on a usually quiet day in February that brings people to town and allows them to visit different businesses in town.” There are 26 businesses lined up this yea...
If you’ve been near Whistle Stop Park lately, then you’ve seen all the progress being made at the future Niwot Children’s Park across the street. Playground equipment is going up and community members are anxiously awaiting the park’s opening. Progress has also been made on the fundraising side of things, but donations are still needed to reach the park’s goal of $500,000. Niwot residents Jeff and Cynthia Lambert, through the family’s Reiman Foundation, provided the first $250,000 to spark their...
The Niwot Children’s Park is less than $60,000 from reaching its goal of $500,000. The fundraising campaign was officially launched in July of 2015. It started with $250,000 from Jeff & Cynthia Lambert and has raised almost $200,000 in under six months. Where has all this money come from? Well, to start, the future park is surrounded by a very generous community. Primarily, it has come from a variety of local businesses, community groups and individuals. Donations have also been made in memory o...
Niwot’s Local Improvement District (LID), reconvened in the New Year at its January meeting on Tues., Jan. 5, where they returned to a quiet month. There were only two funding requests on the agenda, one for Let’s Wine About Winter and the other for the maintenance of the recent trees planted along Second Avenue. Anne Postle, of Osmosis Art Gallery, was present to request $1,191 from the LID on behalf of the Niwot Cultural Arts Association for Let’s Wine About Winter. Last year was the first...
The January meeting for the Niwot Community Association (NCA) was held on Wed., Jan. 6. Some board members were absent due to colds or being on vacation, but the meeting proceeded as normal. NCA members discussed nominations for outstanding NCA volunteers, to recognize people who volunteer their time and efforts at various NCA events. Nominees don’t have to be NCA members, although they can be, but they can also be community members who just enjoy lending a hand. The meeting also included a discussion on various donations the organization g...

Recent concerns about wildlife and vandalism have the Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department keeping a close eye on Twin Lakes in Gunbarrel. The suburban retention ponds were split by a fence in August of 2015 due to rules regarding dogs being on leashes. On the east side, dogs must be on a leash, but on the west side, it is not required, and dogs can run free. The county’s solution was to build a fence to separate the two areas, and locals have been on both sides of it for the last few months. Shortly after the fence was completed, t...
