  • Families can finally connect in person at senior communities

    Patricia Logan|Jul 22, 2020

Shirley Olson walks out of the Hover Community Assisted Living Resident, a vision in blue. The 93-year-old is wearing a vest that matches the sky. Dark blue mountains and yellow stars decorate the bandana that covers her hair. A gray curl slips free. Her opulent blue eyes light up at the sight of her sons, John and Paul, sitting in opposite corners beneath a white canopy on the front lawn. Today they are free of the windows and walls that have separated them for most of the past four months of...

  • Ready for takeoff

    Jul 22, 2020

On July 18, Niwot resident David A. Bruce captured this photo of a juvenile red tailed hawk as it prepared for flight. Bruce and his family have counted the hawk's parents among its neighbors for the past three years. "This year they had three babies, as they did last year too," Bruce said in an email " We have wonderful wildlife here and have no idea how lucky we are to see these creatures in our backyards. This hawk is four months old and just learning to live on its own."...

  • Tom Smathers says goodbye to Niwot Abo's Pizza after 24 years

    Kristen Arendt|Jul 22, 2020

If you have had a pizza from Abo's Pizza in Niwot in the last 24 years and 20 days, you owe some thanks to Tom Smathers. Smathers, or "Big Tom" as he is known locally, has been the long-time owner of Abo's Pizza in Niwot. From feeding hungry high schoolers at lunch to turning out pizzas for dine-in, pick-up, and delivery, in his nearly a quarter of a century owning the restaurant, Smathers and his team have dished up countless pizzas for the Niwot community. But that era quietly came to an end i...

  • Niwot's Codevilla among nation's best swimmers

    Jack Carlough|Jul 22, 2020

Niwot High School girls swim coach Sarah Stamp has run out of superlatives for her top swimmer, Mary Codevilla, who appears on the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association 2019-2020 All-American list for the second straight year. "I would say undoubtedly, probably the most well-rounded, top swimmer that (has) come through Niwot, hands down," Stamp said in describing the outstanding swimmer. Codevilla's talent is recognized past Niwot with her name splashed throughout the NISCA...

  • Boulder primary results are on schedule

    Hannah Stewart|Jul 22, 2020

It has been about three weeks since the primary elections in Boulder County. This election, 55% of Boulder County residents came out to vote. While this may seem like an impressive number-and it is an increase from the 2018 midterms-Boulder County Clerk and Recorder Communications Specialist Mircalla Wozniak was quick to point out that voter turnout depends on many variables and is very localized. For the June 30 primary, there were reportedly 95,610 Democratic, 29,744 Republican and 1,978...

  • Niwot High School Booster Club plans wellness initiative

    Hannah Stewart|Jul 22, 2020

At Niwot High School, there are two parent groups that aim to support students--the Niwot High School Education Foundation and the Niwot High School Boosters, Inc., which supports all athletic teams and other clubs on campus. In fact, in part thanks to the booster club's efforts, Mile High Magazine has ranked Niwot's 4A athletic program number one in Colorado for the past two years. Building on this momentum, booster president Donna Blondeau is excited to get the community involved with the...

  • Story behind the place: Ritz Field

    Jack Carlough|Jul 22, 2020

Niwot Youth Sports baseball was thriving in the 1990s and was in desperate need of additional fields for its over 500 ballplayers. NYS was limited to local school fields and borrowed land for much of its then 20-year history. The situation was not ideal for a growing program. Former NYS Softball director Jim Martinsen reached out to the Left hand Water District in hopes of securing land for future ballfields and his wish was granted. NYS quickly constructed three makeshift fields adjacent to...

  • After 11 years, Niwot girls swim head coach Sarah Stamp retires

    Jack Carlough|Jul 22, 2020

Eleven years and a slew of accomplishments later, Niwot girls swimming head coach Sarah Stamp is calling it quits. "It was just time to step away and focus on my full time job and my family," she said. "I have a little one, so time's a precious thing... (it's) time to let someone else come in and take over." During her tenure as a coach at Niwot, Stamp won back-to-back Northern Conference crowns and led the Cougars to a 4A state runner-up spot in 2019. She was also the statewide 4A Coach of the...

  • A most magical occurrence

    Kate Missett|Jul 22, 2020

In May, a most magical occurrence was in the cards for me, but I had no way to see it coming. When I moved to Colorado, I lost the phone service I used to have in Wyoming and I'd been trying like crazy to get my new phone service up and running. And it is one of those Catch 22 things, so exasperating I was about to pull my hair out. (If you don't know what a Catch 22 is, it comes from a Joseph Heller novel, and here's an example from show biz: you can't get work if you don't have an agent, and...

  • Trying to find local food this summer?

    Emily Long|Jul 22, 2020

The local food scene in the Left Hand Valley is normally thriving in the summer. Things are more complicated this year. In the past, farmers could depend on connecting directly with their customers face-to-face at Boulder County farmers markets, in addition to their own community supported agriculture (CSA) programs. Kids in the 4-H program would spend months or even years raising livestock that they knew they would sell at the Boulder County Fair in early August. Other local food producers...

  • Niwot United Methodist welcomes new pastor

    Jesse Murphy|Jul 22, 2020

The Niwot United Methodist Church welcomed a new pastor earlier this month in Rev. Emily Kintzel, a Colorado native and experienced clergy member. She replaces Rev. Walter "Skip" Strickland, who came out of retirement to serve as interim pastor for the last year. Prior to coming to Niwot, Kintzel was the pastor at the Lyons Community Church for several years. She has also served as a pastor in Evans, Colo., and spent 11 years as a youth director in Longmont before taking the position at NUMC....

  • The 'Move Over' law just added a little more to it

Master Trooper Gary Cutler, Special to the Courier|Jul 22, 2020

On Nov. 26, 2016 my friend Trooper Cody Donahue was killed by a truck that failed to move over while he was investigating a crash. This is a story we hear all too often. Prior to that crash, there was a Move Over law already in effect. So why didn't it work in that situation or countless others? I believe there are several reasons for that. Fully knowing the law is one of them; the other is not paying attention to your surroundings. The Move Over law is set up to assist law enforcement, fire...

  • Crayons to Calculators helps local students prepare for learning in the classroom or at a distance

    Jocelyn Rowley|Jul 22, 2020

Since 2005, the nonprofit Crayons to Calculators (C2C) program has had a simple mission: to provide local students with the supplies they need to start the school year successfully. Created by a partnership between the Education Foundation for St. Vrain Valley and Boulder Valley's Impact on Education, each summer C2C musters a small army of community volunteers to fill more than 11,000 backpacks with donated pencils, notebooks, and other school essentials, which are then distributed to families...

  • Niwot Children's Park Clean-up Day

    Bruce Warren|Jul 22, 2020

Now that Niwot Children's Park has reopened, albeit on a limited basis - no more than 25 people in the park at one time, no more than 10 people in any one group - Niwot resident Elizabeth Wright has organized a Clean-Up Day at the park, scheduled for the last Monday of every month at 8:00 a.m. The first Clean-Up Day will be held on Monday, July 27, at 8 a.m. The early time slot is set to avoid times of heavy usage by children. In keeping with the gathering restrictions, Wright is asking...
