  • The Story Behind the Name: Left Hand Grange

    Leigh Suskin and Kathy Trauner|Jun 22, 2022

Not unlike other local businesses and attractions, Chief Niwot is the namesake for the Left Hand Grange as the Arapaho word for "left-hand" is Ni-wot. What is interesting about the building known as the Left Hand Grange Hall is its rich history. The local Grange organization, known as Left Hand Grange No. 9, initially operated out of the Batchelder School House southwest of Niwot, and received its charter on January 24, 1874. It is currently the oldest active Grange in Colorado. The Granger...

  • Rock & Rails Opening Act - Wendy Woo

    Yule Peterson|Jun 22, 2022

This past Thursday evening's Rock & Rails featured Loveland's Wendy Woo as the opener. Woo is a Colorado singer-songwriter renowned for her guitar work, particularly her unique style of percussive interludes coupled with vocals and guitar. This "slaptap" technique, as Woo has dubbed it, lends a rhythmically complex backdrop of percussion to her music where Woo slaps and taps on her guitar's body and neck, creating an aural treat for all to behold. With over thirty years of performing...

  • Traditions in jewelry

    Hannah Stewart|Jun 22, 2022

One might say that the jewelry business is in Jan Kahl's blood. Her father was a jeweler in Boulder and she eventually took up the mantle; now she and her son run Niwot Jewelry and Gifts on 2nd Avenue and have for the past twenty-six years. "This is a fun business," Kahl said with a smile. "When people are buying jewelry or getting something fixed, it's a happy occasion." In addition to selling and designing an array of jewelry-everything from sterling silver to platinum-the shop also...

  • Ron Ivory and One on One

    Deborah Cameron|Jun 22, 2022

Ron Ivory and his group One on One are a staple of performance venues like Nissi's and Colorado's outdoor community summer concerts. Fans appreciate the blend of Motown, classic soul and old school R&B the musicians offer, and audiences get up out of their seats for covers of classics from The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Al Greene and more. Ron talked to us about how this blend keeps audiences moving while at the same time moves them so that their night becomes something more than what they might...

  • June Review: Black Earth

    Hannah Stewart|Jun 22, 2022

This month's Inkberry Books Review is special for a couple of reasons. First, it's very timely considering current events; Black Earth by Jens Mühling is a nonfiction account of the author's journey through Ukraine. Second, the book was translated from German by Inkberry's very own Gene Hayworth. Nonfiction is a tricky genre-some books feel more like academic materials and others are entertaining. The most entertaining tend to be memoirs or works in which the imagery is so vivid, that it reads...

    Gene Hayworth|Jun 22, 2022

Last year Jude relocated to Niwot from Eugene, Ore., and spent his last four months at the new school. "When you're moving your senior year of high school it's probably not going to be fun no matter what you...

    Special to the Courier|Jun 22, 2022

A Niwot Youth Sports week-long baseball camp was a casualty of Covid-19 for the past two years, but with restrictions lifted, the popular camp returned, as did former camp director Bob Bote. For years, dating back to the early 1980s, Bote conducted a baseball camp for players 5 to 13, using high school players as camp coaches. Bote, who served as the Niwot High School head coach from 1979 through 2006, won five state Class 4A state titles during his tenure, and his summer camps, often sponsored...

The main issues discussed were whether food trucks and other mobile vendors should pay a fee to the...
