NHS girls tennis continues building their winning record

The Niwot High School girls varsity tennis team has won three of the last four matches, and are currently undefeated in 4A Region 5 league play with an impressive 5-0 record. Their overall record stands at 6-4 against tough non-conference competition. After ten matches last season, the Cougars were 3-2 in their league and 5-5 overall.

On April 3, the Cougars went on the road to Frederick High School and came away with a 7-0 sweep. The team won every match in straight sets and lots of bagels were served.

Playing just a few days later at home on April 5 against Northridge High School, NHS won again 7-0. Tracy Yu moved up to #1 singles and easily won her match 6-0, 6-0. Cassie Chen played #2 and won easily 6-0, 6-1. Magnolia Valentine played #3 singles for the first time this season and overwhelmed her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Mountain View High School offered little more than the Cougars’ previous two opponents and lost to NHS, 6-1 in Niwot on April 9. Emory Rich lost a tough match at the #1 singles position for Cougars, but the rest of the team steamrolled the Lions.

After three wins in a row, NHS finally lost a match to Cheyenne Mountain High School on April 9. Turnabout must be fair play as Cheyenne beat Niwot handily 7-0. Sarada Gundavarapu came back to play in her familiar #1 singles position, but unfortunately lost her match 6-0, 6-0. The rest of the team didn’t fare much better. The only close match was at the #4 doubles position where Hannah Nelson and Jordan Rutkowski lost, 6-3, 7-6(7-5).

The Cougars played Severance High School on April 16, but results were not available at the time of publication.
