All Local, All The Time

Nalani and Wendy Woo keep the crowd on their feet

A beautiful evening greeted concert-goers at the penultimate Rock & Rails concert of the season on Aug. 24. Although gray skies threatened, nothing more than a brief dash of rain fell, making for a perfect summer evening.

Rock & Rails veteran Wendy Woo opened the evening. A Boulder native, Woo's parents were founding faculty members at Naropa University in Boulder. Influential beat writers such as Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and Ken Kesey would be regulars in the living room – a fact she credits her eclectic upbringing.

The atmosphere helped her develop her craft as a singer and guitarist. Woo started playing guitar as a child so she could be her own accompanist. After mastering vocals and guitar, Woo moved on to songwriting. Her many musical influences include everyone from folk chanteuse Suzanne Vega to the legendary Paul Simon.

The trademark blended rhythms in Simon's music inspired her to add similar complexity to her own compositions. Woo can next be seen at the Rise: Women's Concert and at McKenzie's Pub in Ft. Collins and Harley's Dream – A Puppy Mill Awareness Event in Berthoud.

The Nalani Effect with Regi Wooten provided music from 6:30 p.m. until after dark. A Niwot High School graduate, bassist and vocalist, Nalini DeMarco Clisset has opened several times at Rock & Rails but this was her first time headlining. The Nalani Effect is made up of Nalani, Regi Wooten and Adam Wooton. The group plays old school funk and R&B, focusing on music that gets the crowd dancing. Set numbers included "Brick House," "All About That Bass," "Proud Mary" (Tina Turner style) and "Respect" made famous by Aretha Franklin. The group had crowd members on their feet most of the evening. Nalani will be opening next week as a solo act for Hazel Miller, a long time friend and mentor, who also jumped on stage with her protege.

Via Mobility Services and Whistle Stop Park shared the night's tip jar of $1,642.

Via Mobility provides a broad range of services including on-demand, door-through-door service with wheelchair-accessible vehicles, to rides on the HOP to the University of Colorado-Boulder campus or downtown Boulder. In addition to transportation, they provide mobility management services, educational outreach and travel planning which helps to improve accessibility. Headquartered in Boulder, Via Mobility launched in 1979 and serves Niwot and Gunbarrel area residents.

Whistle Stop Park should be familiar to most Niwotians...if nothing else than being the location of Rock & Rails. Open to the public during daylight hours, the park is also available to rent for the actual costs for special events. The park is administered by the Niwot Cultural Arts Association (NCAA) which also runs Rock & Rails in conjunction with the Niwot Business Association. In addition to Rock & Rails, the non-profit organization is responsible for numerous cultural events throughout Niwot including Let's Wine About Winter, First Friday Art Walks, Why Not Niwot? Juried Art Show, Oktoberfest, Niwot Jazz Festival, and the Niwot Sculpture Park.

For the last Rock & Rails this season, Nalini opens for fan favorite Hazel Miller. For a full schedule and more information visit Rock & Rails.
