NHS hires new girls basketball coach

Niwot High School Athletic Director Joe Brown announced that Todd Trobaugh has been hired as the new Cougar girls basketball coach. Trobaugh has not coached at the high school level, but has extensive experience coaching girls club basketball. He grew up in South Boulder, attended Fairview High School, Colorado State University, and obtained a business degree from CU.

In his day job, Trobaugh works in the banking industry in operational risk and compliance.

"I started coaching as a girls program volunteer at the YMCA, then ran a non-profit girls club in Boulder/Superior that grew to 50 girls pre-covid," Trobaugh said. "Most recently I had been working as a girls developmental team coach at the middle school and high school level for a private club program. That will end with my transition to high school."

Trobaugh plans to hit the ground running. "This summer we plan to play in a local league, attend two team camps, play in a 3 v. 3 league, hold open gyms and play multiple scrimmage games against local teams in Boulder County," he said.

Trobaugh replaces Jon Miller, who stepped down for family reasons. Last year, the Cougars finished with a record of 4-18, but most of the key players were freshmen or sophomores.

"We had 16 applicants," Brown said, which is a much higher number than the number of applicants for some of the recent NHS coaching positions. "I think people looked at the young players we have coming back," he said.

In a letter to players, Brown said, "Coach Trobaugh will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the NHS girls' basketball program. Having dedicated many years to various youth and club basketball programs, his passion for coaching girls' basketball is unparalleled."
