All Local, All The Time

New brewery brings new brews to Gunbarrel

Beyond the Mountain Brewing Company opened its doors in Gunbarrel early this month, bringing more flavor for those looking for a nice place to sit down for a brew.

Managing member Charles Hixon and head brewer Morgan Way have had this as a goal for a long time — they’ve known each other since they were 15 and both started brewing in college.

They hail from Virginia and Maryland, but had a hunch Colorado would be a good place to open a tap room.

“Colorado has one of the best beer scenes and we wanted to learn from the best,” Hixon said. “So we came out here to start brewing.”

They each have about eight years’ professional brewing in Denver and Boulder, bringing those skills into their BTM IPA and Basil Saison.

There are currently eight beers on tap in the 1,500 square foot taproom that can have up to 12 different brews as they come through.

The brewing magic happens in the other 3,000 square feet of their location at 6035 Longbow in Gunbarrel.

Another popular brew currently is Tim-Beer, inspired by a local band, and something the brewery plans to expand on.

“We strive to combine our love of beer and our love of live music,” Hixon said. “We are very heavily in the music scene, and we hope to be the place to go for live music.”

For every pint of the music-inspired beer, one dollar is donated to a charity of the band’s choice.

“We work with the band to develop the style of beer and the recipe,” Hixon said. “Then they come back and actually help out and do a collaboration with us.”

Hixon said that they hope to have live music become a weekly thing starting next month. Their location has a stage, a sound system, and a projector, and can live stream anything. They also plan on inviting food trucks to come out on the weekends.

“We’re trying to create an environment for beer lovers who also enjoy live music,” Hixon said. “People can come and hang out and appreciate a good place for both. A lot of people have been hearing by word of mouth and coming to check us out,” he added. “It’s been a cool experience.”

Beyond the Mountain Brewing Company’s hours are from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and from 12 noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, they can be found on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (@btmbrewing).
