Clean-up days in Gunbarrel Estates

June 10 and 11 saw residents of Gunbarrel Estates recycling electronics, offering free “treasures” and throwing away unwanted items.

Cindy Maynard and David Vincent of WK Real Estate sponsored the June 10 electronics recycling. “We do the electronics drive ourselves every summer,” Vincent said. “We pay for the truck and everybody is welcome to bring whatever they like.”

Both live Gunbarrel Estates. “It’s a nice opportunity to give back to the neighborhood,” Vincent said.

Maynard and Vincent have been sponsoring the event for eight years. R2 Stewardship is contracted to do the recycling. The company does electronic and scrap metal recycling. “They clear hard drives so you can recycle securely,” Vincent said. Some items can be repurposed and given to charity, rather than being thrown in a scrap pile.

“They make sure that all of the … toxins don’t go to the landfill,” Maynard added.

On Sunday, June 11 the Gunbarrel Estates’ Homeowners Association gave dues-paying residents the opportunity to get rid of household trash. Theo Dierks, HOA president, said, “The event is called Trash to Treasures. This is our sixth time doing it. We do it every other year.”

To keep the event fresh, things were changed up a bit. Residents were encouraged to put their treasures, which they wanted to give away, in front of their houses on June 10. Then on June 11 the HOA provided dumpsters for trash.

“This is our most popular event.” Dierks said. “This year we have six 20-yard dumpsters, with one strictly for yard waste.”

Jonathan Epstein agreed. He said, “It’s such a treat that our homeowners association puts this on every year. It brings the neighborhood together and lets us clean up our houses and yards. It’s such a good thing.

In three hours most of the dumpsters had been filled and hauled away. As Dierks said, “It’s fast and furious.” For many others, it’s fun too.
