All nine members of the Niwot Local Improvement District advisory committee (LID) were present for the Nov. 1 meeting at the Niwot Inn. Treasurer Bruce Rabeler reported that revenues continue to climb as collections through August are up over $26,000 from a year ago. He noted that with an approval of the loan funding request on the agenda, the LID would have approved over $222,000 in expenditures for 2022. The 2022 LID budget is only $170,000, but Rabeler reminded the committee that the budget is set at 80% of collections from two years ago....

A request from the Boulder County Sheriff to store long rifles inside Niwot High School and Lyons Middle-Senior High School was approved by the St. Vrain Valley School District School Board at its Oct. 26 meeting. The request was first presented in 2018 out of belief that longer response times to Niwot High School and Lyons High School by law enforcement in the event of an active shooter incident would be mitigated if school resource officers had access to rifles securely stored in the school building. The request was not approved at that...

Folks worried about Covid and crowds seemed a distant memory. The sun was blasting and families with their candy scavengers in tow, and others being dragged to and fro by their costume-decorated dogs, were all wearing huge smiles as they walked through town to attend the various activities. Along with all of...

Hair is flying these days, but lately it’s because of static electricity instead of wind. In Boulder County last Wednesday, the humidity was as low as 9% in North Boulder and 11% in other areas. Posts on social media were calling on the community to be watchful because the lack of moisture and relative low humidity denote very dry air. Dry air creates the static electricity that can be seen around the community. Even pet’s fur and horse’s tails were creating halos of static last week. Then, a grass fire broke out near the Calwood burn scar...

Since the birth of our nation, voting still remains a privilege. The Constitution itself denied voting rights for women and enslaved people. Jim Crow laws suppressed the vote in Black communities, and language barriers were exploited among immigrants. Constitutional amendments were passed to expand the right to vote, and legislation during the civil rights movement removed some barriers to voting. Even today, ballot drop boxes and polling places are located hundreds of miles away from Native American Reservations, and recent legislation in...
When grocery and convenience stores started stocking full strength and craft beers in 2019, it wasn't clear how Colorado's beer market would respond. The numbers were initially reported to be up by 20% and a new monthly record was set at 9.8 million gallons sold in January of 2019. That was a 1.6 million gallon increase from the previous year. (Ben Markus, CPR News, May 14, 2019) If Proposition 125 passes this November, Colorado's grocery and convenience stores will be allowed to add wine to...
