Cheruiyot leads Niwot High golf at state

The Niwot High School girls golf team finished ninth at the 4A Girls Golf State Tournament at The Broadlands in Broomfield on Monday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 20, posting a two-day total of 558 points.

The Cougars showed their strength in a highly competitive field, with Riverdale Ridge High School taking first place with 500 points, followed by Durango High School in second (513) and Ponderosa High School in third (529).

Despite the challenges, the Cougars displayed resilience throughout the event. Sophomore Wendy Cheruiyot was the standout performer for the Cougars, finishing in sixth place overall with a score of 166. Cheruiyot had an impressive first round on May 19, where she sat in fifth place with a score of 80, ultimately securing a spot in the top 10 by the end of the tournament.

Freshman Sonya Holmes finished 34th overall with a two-day total of 193. Holmes, who has had a strong freshman season, continued to improve as she gained valuable experience in her first state tournament. Sophomore Adison Murphy came in 46th with a score of 200, while junior Emmy Hostelley finished 62nd with a score of 210.

After round one, Niwot was sitting in ninth place with 274 points, led by Cheruiyot, who sat in fifth place overall after the first round.

Looking toward next season, Niwot's team is poised for even greater success. With no seniors on the roster this year, all four players will return next season, bringing valuable experience with them.
