Student Athlete of the Week: Weston Domich

Whether it was triple jump, long jump, or sprinting down the track, Weston Domich did a little bit of everything for Niwot High School this season. The senior helped the Cougars capture their first Class 4A boys state track and field title since 2021, capping off a high school career built on steady improvement and a strong team bond.

Domich first got into track and field in eighth grade. At the time, his focus was not on jumping or racing. He only joined REAL Training to get faster for football. But somewhere along the way, the sport stuck.

Now, as a senior, Domich is one of Niwot's most versatile and dependable athletes. He competed in the long jump, triple jump, and shorter distance relays and races, contributing points across the board. Out of everything, he said the triple jump is his favorite.

At the Boulder County Championships on April 12, Domich put together one of the most complete performances of his career. He earned MVP honors after leaping 45 feet 4.5 inches in the triple jump, taking first in the long jump with a mark of 21 feet 10 inches, helping the Cougars' 200-meter relay team win in 1:28.83, and setting a personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.72.

"Winning the meet and MVP was really cool," Domich said. "That meet definitely stands out the most for me this season."

Even though he was not in the spotlight at state, Domich said the best part was seeing his teammates step up when it mattered most. "It was really cool to watch the team go out, compete, and win," he said. "Watching so many of my teammates, who worked extremely hard, get what they were looking for was just such a cool experience."

He credited his coaches for building a team culture that pushed him to grow, both on and off the track. "I've grown a lot physically, but even more so mentally," Domich said. "Track, this team, and the coaches have helped me grow from a boy to a man, and I couldn't be more thankful."

That growth did not come from one big moment. Rather, it came from hours of practicing, competing, and learning how to work through pressure. Domich said the bonds he built with his coaches were one of the best parts of his time with the program. "I'll miss my coaches the most," he said. "The connection I built with them is incredible."

He continued, "I'll miss Kingston Staton as well."

Outside of track, Domich said his life is pretty straightforward. "I don't do much outside of track," he said. "I just run, eat, sleep, and learn." His favorite class this semester was physics. "I had a lot of good friends in that class, and a lot of teammates as well," he shared.

This fall, Domich will head to Colorado Mesa University, where he plans to continue his track and field career while studying civil engineering.

"This team is like a family to me," Domich said.

And for an athlete who gave everything he had to his team, there may be no better way to sum it up.
