Mead High School's girls lacrosse postseason journey concluded in the Class 4A state semifinals with a 16-10 loss to top-seeded Evergreen High School on Wednesday, May 14, at Englewood High School.
Senior Lucy Connors, a Niwot High School student, led Mead's offense with seven goals, bringing her postseason total to 23. Juniors Morgan Elson and Emmy Tecu, the latter also from Niwot High, contributed two goals and one goal, respectively.
The Mavericks fell behind early as Evergreen opened the game on a 5-0 run. Mead fought back, trimming the deficit to 8-5 by halftime and pulling within two goals at 10-8 in the second half. But Evergreen responded with four straight goals to put the game out of reach.
Evergreen's victory over Mead advanced them to the state championship game, where they secured their second consecutive state title with a dominant 19-6 win over No. 2 seed Green Mountain High School on Friday, May 16, at Peter Barton Stadium in Denver.
Still, there is plenty for the Mavericks to be proud of. The team wrapped up the year with a 13-5 overall record, picked up a first-round bye in the state bracket, and delivered back-to-back playoff wins over No. 13 Telluride High School and No. 5 Golden High School.
This spring also marked the debut season for head coach Rachel Class, who helped guide a roster filled with players from across the St. Vrain Valley School District.
With Connors graduating, Mead will lose a major offensive weapon, but the future remains bright with underclassmen who gained valuable playoff experience.
