"Another successful year," said John Barto, event organizer for the Niwot Community Association's (NCA) annual Clean-Up Day. "The weather was perfect, we had a lot of great help from volunteers such as the Scouts of Troop 161 and the Niwot High School Marching Band's drumline," he added.
This year's event was held on Saturday May 17 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and was renamed to honor the late Neal Anderson, original organizer of the event and past NCA president.
After having organized and advertised the event for the past decade, Barto said he has figured out how to prevent any chaotic backlogs. This year had great attendance with a little over 160 visits with a consistent crowd flow throughout the day and no backups onto Niwot Road.
As always, electronics, styrofoam, mattresses, yard waste, paint, and large metal recycling items were collected. The new additions this year were more hazardous waste materials beyond just oil and latex paint, to include antifreeze, motor oil, and batteries, thanks to Boulder County's resource trained workers in handling these materials. The collection of large tires was also new this year as well as continued services from Community Cycles to help with the collection of old bikes.
The Boulder County Chipping Program also returned this year with workers from Wright Tree Service to collect yard waste for chipping as a part of their help with wildfire mitigation and repurposing the chips for mulch.
"We look forward to seeing everyone at the next NCA event on Saturday, June 14, for the Slepicka Tractor Show," said Barto, "as well as our other events this year and next year's Clean-Up Day."
