Kasper, Ritzenhein break track records at St. Vrain HOKA Invitational

The Niwot High School Cougars had a solid showing at the St. Vrain HOKA Invitational on Friday, May 9, held at Everly-Montgomery Field in Longmont.

Senior Reese Kasper led the way for the girls, taking first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.99 seconds, finishing half a second ahead of the second-place runner. Kasper earned second place in the 400-meter dash, running 54.38 seconds.

Kasper’s time in the 400-meter, along with that of the first place finisher Kiana Cumings from Windsor High School (53.89), broke both the meet record, set in 2011 by Samantha Bergren of Middle Park High School (55.69), and the stadium record, which had been set by Abby Glynn of Mead High School in 2019 (54.79).

Also in the 400-meter dash, Niwot sophomore Sammie Holliday finished seventh in 58.21 seconds.

Junior Addison Ritzenhein took second place in the 1600-meter with a time of 4:46.65, just behind first-place finisher Rosie Mucharsky from Denver East High School (4:46.02). Both girls broke the meet and stadium records, which were set in 2024 by Isabel Allori of Liberty Common High School (4:46.83).

Junior Anna Prok finished sixth in the event in 4:58.86, while sophomore Elise Hagen (13th, 5:01.11) also finished strong.

In the 200-meter dash, senior Eliana Henriques finished fifth with a time of 25.46 seconds, and senior Kate Schmidthuber was eighth (25.66). Henriques finished 15th (12.62) and Schmidthuber (12.70) took 23rd in the 100-meter dash, as well.

Hagen also placed seventh in the 800-meter with a time of 2:17.43, while senior Hayden Flynn finished 13th (2:18.77) and sophomore Elsza Bergen came in 21st (2:20.83).

In the field events, senior Jade West threw 40 feet 8 inches to win the shot put. Sophomore Mahlya Blanks added a 10th-place finish with a throw of 34 feet 3.5 inches. Henriques also competed in the triple jump, placing seventh with a leap of 34 feet 11 inches.

Freshman Sienna Wood (8th, 34 feet 10 inches) and sophomore Stella Priest (9th, 34 feet 7 inches) rounded out solid finishes for Niwot in the triple jump. Priest also competed in the long jump posting a seventh-place finish with a leap of 16 feet and 5.5 inches.

The boys had a strong showing in the distance events, led by junior Rocco Culpepper, who claimed first place in the 1600-meter with a time of 4:10.55. Junior Ryder Keeton (5th, 4:12.56), sophomore Quinn Sullivan (6th, 4:12.89), and junior Hunter Robbie (7th, 4:14.15) also ran well, with all four finishing in the top 10 in the event.

Senior Evan Kear (9:26.12) and junior Gabriel Marshall (9.26.88) walked away from the 3200-meter with seventh and ninth-place finishes, respectively.

In the 400-meter dash, junior Joshua Archuleta took fifth with a time of 49.83 seconds. Junior Townes Bernstein finished 10th (50.40), and junior Kingston Staton was 18th (51.04) in the event.

In the 100-meter hurdles, senior Jaden Martinez and junior Kingston Staton finished in 10th and 11th place, respectively, each clocking a time of 15.03 seconds. In the 800-meter, senior Cole Mazurana took ninth with a time of 1:56.22, and senior Lincoln Brewer finished 12th in 1:57.16.

The 4x100-meter relay team, consisting of senior Emiliano Flores, junior Jackson Bates, Archuleta, and Bernstein, finished eighth with a time of 43.44 seconds.

In the field, junior Kingston Staton competed in the triple jump for a fifth-place finish with a jump of 43 feet, 1.25 inches, and senior Weston Domich walked away with a sixth-place finish in the long jump after a leap of 21 feet, 8 inches.

With the Colorado State Track and Field Championships coming up from May 15 to May 17 at Jeffco Stadium, Niwot will be looking to build on these solid performances, bringing their best to the last stretch of the season.
