Senior Spotlight: Mohi Bauer

Mohi Bauer, a senior at Niwot High School, has a passion for logic-based problem-solving and mentally challenging tasks. Bauer constantly seeks new ways to further these interests apart from his classes, including participation in competitions and starting his own club at Niwot High School.

"During my freshman and sophomore years, I participated in Niwot's Chess Club, Math Club, and Up-a-Creek Robotics' FRC team 1619 on the robot software subteam," he said. "During my junior year, I co-founded a coding club with Shiva Garuda and Justin Ge and participated in the Lockheed Martin CodeQuest coding competition and the CS@Mines High School Programming Competition."

Among all he has done, however, the first of his two proudest achievements has been maintaining straight A's throughout his entire high school career.

Despite his wide spectrum of achievements, Bauer says he is not immune to the common struggle of procrastination. In fact, he said that time management has been one of his biggest challenges in high school. "I have struggled with time management, procrastination, and the dreaded senioritis," he explained. "I have overcome this challenge, for the most part, by prioritizing certain work ahead of others and ensuring that I still spend time having fun to maintain a healthy work-life balance, and so I avoid burnout. With college applications and a heavy senior workload, this was especially difficult, but I nonetheless managed to get everything about done on time."

The second of Bauer's proudest achievements in high school was a game-winning soccer goal he made during his junior year against a rival soccer team. He described it as his most memorable high school experience due to "the atmosphere, seeing our sturdy crowd which had traveled just to watch us, and the knowledge that I had guaranteed us (Niwot High School's varsity soccer team) a spot in the next round of the tournament."

Bauer has also enjoyed traveling during his high school years, because it "fostered my love for adventure and going out of my comfort zone," and ultimately helped him to become "someone who is very willing to try new things and take risks."

Looking back at his journey, Bauer is proud of how far he's come. "Four years doesn't seem like long, but I have learned much more about how the world works," he said. "From a financial standpoint especially, I feel much more prepared to tackle the world now than I did as a freshman. And thanks to my friends, I would also say I have had a lot of social growth as well."

Apart from academics and school, Bauer keeps busy. "Outside of school," he said, "I am big on athletics and travel. Just to name a few sports I spend significant time on, I have played soccer as my main sport, I have spent a lot of time hiking 14ers in the summers with my family and friends, I am a big skier and snowboarder, and my family often goes on long camping adventures or road trips with heavy emphasis on water sports like scuba diving, wakeboarding, and cliff jumping."

Bauer plans to attend the University of Texas at Dallas where he will be double majoring in mathematics and computer science.
