Niwot girls golf drives it in the Granite Peaks League tournament

The Niwot High School girls golf team competed in two consecutive Granite Peaks League tournaments at The Olde Course at Loveland, and at the Coyote Creek Golf Course.

On Wednesday, April 23, Niwot finished sixth at The Olde Course at Loveland with a team score of 364. Sophomore Wendy Cheruiyot led the Cougars with an 84, followed by sophomore Addison Murphy with an 87, freshman Sonya Holmes with a 92, while both junior Emmy Hostelley and senior Ayla Schatz each recorded a 101.

Ahead of the tournament, Schatz said she felt confident in her ability to play well. "Before the tournament, I felt pretty good about being able to have a good round," Schatz said. "After the tournament, I was pleased with my performance, but I definitely could’ve done a lot better." Schatz said her goals for the remainder of the season include breaking 100 in tournament play and maintaining a positive mindset.

The Cougars returned to the links on Thursday, April 24, at Coyote Creek Golf Course, where Coach Ed Weaver’s squad rebounded with a second-place finish and a team score of 371. Cheruiyot finished with an 81, Holmes shot a 94, Hostelley carded a 97, Murphy finished with a 99, and Sonia Bingham posted a 111.

As postseason tournaments approach, Niwot’s golfers continue to build momentum and sharpen their competitive edge.

The team's focus now shifts to the Class 4A Region 3 tournament, scheduled for Monday, May 13, at Twin Peaks Golf Course in Longmont. This regional event serves as a qualifier for the 4A State Championships, which will be held at The Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield on May 19–20.

The top two teams from each regional, along with the top 13 individual finishers not on qualifying teams, will advance to the state championships.
