All Local, All The Time

"Be More Like Bert" video now online

A tribute song written by local musician Kevin Dooley for Bert Steele is now available online in video format. Recorded on Feb. 7, 2024, at the Left Hand Grange, the video is a montage created by Niwot's Social Media Coordinator Kristina Rugg using content from the recording session and photos provided by the Steele family.

Niwot Market owner Bert Steele passed away on August 7, 2023. In December 2023, Dooley composed a song in his honor to be played at the dedication of Steele's memorial bench in front of the market. Onlookers were asked to sing the refrain, "Be more like Bert" at the dedication. The song and the participation of the community chorus elicited such warmth that Dooley felt compelled to record the piece for the community.

Joined by recording engineer James Tuttle, bassist, Chris Engleman, fiddle player Oliver Jacobson, mandolinist Steve Mullins, keyboardist Michael Tomich, singer Jeanne McAdara and special guest Pete Wernick on banjo and electric table, the project came to fruition. Family and friends of Steele's came to the Grange to sing the chorus as they had during the dedication ceremony.

It's Dooley's wish that the recording and video be used in any manner that honors Bert Steele and inspires others to be the kind and caring person that Steele was.
