Sports notes

Niwot Youth Sports

Opening day festivities and the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new building at Hangge Fields at Monarch Park, originally scheduled for Sunday, April 28, was postponed due to wet grounds after the weekend rain. According to NYS Executive Director Pat Longseth, the ceremony will be rescheduled at a later date, yet to be determined.

CHSAA Board

Niwot High School Athletic Director Joe Brown was elected to the board of directors of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) at its recent meeting. Brown will serve as the District 2 representative.

Girls Flag Football

On April 23, the CHSAA board of directors voted 57-9 to sanction the sport of girls flag football in Colorado, beginning with the 2024-25 school year. The Denver Broncos were involved in creating a pilot program with schools in the Jeffco, Denver and Cherry Creek school districts, in which teams played a flag football schedule in 2022 and 2023. The interest in the sport led to CHSAA officially sanctioning it. Colorado becomes the 11th state nationwide to sanction the sport. If there are at least 50 schools sponsoring a team, there will be two classifications for the sport in its first season.

Niwot Youth Sports has been offering flag football for boys and girls for several years. There is no word yet as to whether Niwot High School will offer girls flag football as a sport next fall.

Basketball

CHSAA also announced a major change in Colorado high school basketball. Beginning with the 2026-27 season, teams will see the implementation of a shot clock for boys and girls basketball at the varsity level.
