NHS girls tennis keeps winning

The Niwot High School girls varsity tennis team has won their last three matches in a row. Most recently, they beat Fort Morgan High School 7-0 on March 26 and then kept the momentum going against Thompson Valley High School winning 6-1 on March 28.

Sahasra Kolli won her #1 singles match 6-0, 6-0 against the Fort Morgan Mustangs. Not wanting to be left out of the demolition, Tracy Yu beat her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at #2 singles and Cassie Chen sent her opponent packing 6-0, 6-1 at #3 singles.

The Cougars' doubles teams were just as dominant as they worked to get off the court quickly and make the ride back to Niwot from Ft. Morgan.

Anne Haley and Samantha Zacky cruised at the #1 doubles position, winning their match 6-1, 6-0. Harper Behmer and Masha Oshmyan won going away 6-0, 6-1 at the #2 doubles position. Magnolia Valentine and

Jordan Rutkowski at #3 doubles, won the closest match of the day 6-1, 6-1 and with their love of bagels, Caitlyn Carmichael and Hannah Nelson closed out their opponents at #4 doubles match 6-0, 6-0.

The Cougars' match against Thompson Valley High School was played on Niwot's home courts. Sahasra Kolli lost a close three-setter at #1 singles 4-6, 6-0, 0-1 (8-10). Those third sets are tough given the pressure of the tiebreaker format. Sahasra played well, but came up just a bit short.

Tracy Yu, who continues to push herself playing both varsity tennis and soccer, played consistently in her 6-2, 6-2 win at #2 singles. Cassie Chen, at #3 singles won a relatively close two-setter 6-4, 6-3.

NHS' doubles continued their love of sweeps, winning all four of their matches.

At #1 doubles, Samantha Zacky and Sarada Gundavarapu came through in a close first set and then found their groove in the second, winning 7-5, 6-2. Harper Behmer and Masha Oshmyan didn't need long to find their strokes in the first or second sets and won their match at #2 doubles by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Magnolia Valentine and Jordan Rutkowski won 6-3, 6-2 at #3 doubles. Completing the sweep, Hannah Nelson and Caitlyn Carmichael beat their opponents at #4 doubles 6-3, 6-2.

The Cougars are 3-3 on the season just as they were after six matches last season. A winning record is within their reach as their next match is April 3, at Frederick High School, a team they beat 7-0 last season - to take their record then to 4-3.
