Niwot High School Clubs - Spotlight on the Gender Studies Club

Niwot High School is host to over 60 student-run clubs, and one stand-out is the Gender Studies Club.

"Niwot Gender Studies is devoted to being a discussion-based safe space for anyone and everyone to talk about topics related to gender issues in the world," said Club Leader Claire Jensen. "We hold meetings every other week devoted to different topics and talk about them in-depth, in addition to service projects around our Niwot community. We have worked with non-profits to advocate for period poverty as well."

Gender Studies Club is an inclusive club for students at Niwot who are interested in discussing their world, and the issues revolving around gender that are waiting to be acknowledged and changed. The club meets every Friday in teacher facilitator Emily Walker's room (Room 140).

Many people have come to the Gender Studies Club, but consistent members include Evan DeBusk, Julia Freischlag, Morgan Fisher, James Tindle, Oliver Fowler, Amber Thornton, and Claire Jensen.

Freischlag and Jensen worked to ensure that their annual period product drive traveled throughout the school and got as many donations as possible. "Something cool that you may not know is that we have a period product drive every year, and all pads and panty liners donated are free for students to use," Jensen said. "You can find them in many classrooms around the building, and every English teacher has one. You can also donate more at any time."

Students are encouraged to contribute to the cause by donating, telling classmates about it, or reposting social media posts regarding the drive.

Jensen explained why she is involved with the club, saying, "Gender Studies gave me a place to go and talk about the injustices many people were and are facing in the world. I knew that I had to keep it going to provide that opportunity for others."

The Gender Studies Club has brought students together by doing good for the Niwot community, communicating about important topics, and encouraging students to stand up for their beliefs. You can find more information about Gender Studies Club on Instagram (@niwot.genderstudies).
