NHS girls soccer starts on the right foot

According to Coach Stephen Dimit, “It’s hard to get a win to open the season because there’s not a lot of prep time.”

But the NHS girls soccer team was able to do just that last Thursday, March 7, in a snowy, messy game against Centaurus High School, coming away with a 2-1 victory.

Paige Russell, a senior, and Hannah Wurth, a freshman, each scored for the Cougars. Margaux Boyer, another senior, had an assist.

The Cougars have a 20-player roster and half of them are freshman and sophmores. Dimit said, “That’s a young team.” He’s leaning on Russell and Boyer to show leadership and help their younger teammates be successful. Coach Dimit loves the spirit the underclassmen are bringing to the team. “They’re fired up,” he said.

The Cougars’ second game of the season took place last Saturday, March 9, against Palmer Ridge High School. It ended in a 0-0 tie characterized as a “gritty defensive game” by Dimit. “Palmer is a good team and Monument is a difficult place to play,” Coach Dimit commented, indicating that the tie was a good result.

In keeping with a new CHSAA rule for girls soccer this year, the game did not go to overtime and ended at the end of the second forty-minute half. This rule change aligns girls' high school soccer with other leagues.

The Cougars played Wheat Ridge High School March 12, but the results were not available at press time.
