All Local, All The Time

First-ever Niwot High School unified theater class

Niwot High School is dedicated to fostering an environment that emphasizes individual growth and engagement, continuously offering diverse opportunities for students to excel in a setting that prioritizes their voices and enjoyment. One way this goal is implemented is through the Unified Programs at NHS.

With the help of Amanda Foust, Chair of the Drama Department, Niwot High School created a unified theater class. Niwot High School is one of the first schools in the St. Vrain Valley School District to offer a unified theater class, and Foust is excited to implement it for the first time.

Foust recently graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts in theater education. This is her second year at Niwot High School, and she has already been breaking barriers and creating major change. Last year with "Beauty and the Beast," she broke the school ticket record and had the first-ever sold-out show. This year, she started unified theater at Niwot High School while simultaneously directing "Shrek the Musical."

Unified theater classes are in full swing this semester as Foust and all of her students are preparing for their show, "Descendants: The Musical," which will be performed on May 3 at Niwot High School.

Every class begins with a stretching warm-up. The class then reviews past choreography and learns new choreography. After dances are learned, then the script and acting techniques are taught. The show is reviewed extensively and each scene is thoroughly discussed.

Unified theater gives all types of students a way to connect in a fun environment. Students with special needs are a part of the ensemble while also learning theatrical skills, collaboration, and belonging.

The unified theater class at Niwot High School is a beacon of inclusivity and creativity within the educational community. Under Foust's guidance and its passionate students, this program surpasses traditional theater boundaries to create a space where every student, regardless of ability, can explore their potential in the arts.

This initiative's success reflects Niwot High School's commitment to fostering an environment where diversity and personal growth are celebrated. It sets a precedent for other St. Vrain Valley School District schools and beyond. As the curtains close on each performance, what remains profoundly impacts the students' confidence, empathy, and sense of community.

The unified theater class is more than just a class, it is a transformative experience that shapes the leaders of tomorrow by teaching them the values of acceptance and collaboration today. As the program looks to the future, it promises continued excellence and innovation in the arts, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to shine on stage and in life.
