Niwot High School Clubs - Spotlight on the Asian Student Association

Niwot High School is host to over 60 student-run clubs, and one stand-out is the Asian Student Association (ASA).

In the words of the ASA leadership team, "Asian Student Association is one of the many diverse clubs at Niwot High School. The club is dedicated to promoting understanding, appreciation, and celebration of the diverse cultures within Asia. Through educational presentations, cultural showcases, and community outreach, ASA aims to foster cross-cultural understanding and create a welcoming environment for all members of the community. The club's mission is to spread awareness of different Asian cultures, to embrace diversity, and to give students a voice."

ASA is sponsored by Ms. Melissa Collins, a math teacher at NHS. Club leadership includes Katherine Cui (President), Tenzin Takza (Vice President), Mya Haux (Secretary), and Aditi Patel (Communications Officer). The leadership team is passionate about promoting cultural awareness and fostering inclusivity. They plan and coordinate club activities, engage members, and represent the club within the broader community.

ASA hopes to create a joyful and inclusive environment for all. Many Niwot students have found community within this club.

Patel explained, "Before we created ASA, there wasn't a space where I could share about all the amazing aspects of my culture without facing ridicule. I am confident that this club has the ability to revolutionize inclusivity at this school, considering how far we have already come. We are spreading the voices of underrepresented populations at our school and the outcome has been unbelievable. So many students, alongside myself and the leadership team, have been learning about new cultures every month and it has helped us to keep open minds and unify us within the school community. ASA is a phenomenal club, and I'm so excited to see all the incredible opportunities it will bring."

This year, ASA has actively participated in many culturally significant festivals and events originating in Asia. Kicking off with a successful Mid-Autumn Festival celebration, the club has continued its vibrant meetings with Navratri, Filipino Culture Day, and Thai Culture Day. Most recently, ASA hosted a Lunar New Year Potluck, drawing over 30 students to engage in festivities and learn about a holiday common in many Asian countries.
