All Local, All The Time
One of Niwot High School's ongoing traditions is "Cupidgrams." Cupidgrams are musical Valentine's Day greetings performed by the students in Niwot High School's Evenstar Choir during the first few weeks of February.
A Cupidgram is a Valentine a student can buy for a classmate or teacher. Students pick a song off of the list provided, and the recipient of the Cupidgram will eventually be sung to in one of their classes on Feb. 15.
In the words of Niwot's choir director Laura Walters, "I love the creativity and independence that goes in with each group for Cupidgrams. The performing groups are student led, and the leadership that I see from everyone is amazing. It's fun for the groups to create their own thing. They have a lot of ownership in the performances because for the most part, they perfect the performances from start to finish."
This year, there are a variety of songs to choose from that are universally loved including "Can't Help Falling in Love," "My Girl," "My Love Mine All Mine," "Night Changes," "Only Girl in the World," "Love Fool" and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder." Group leaders Fred Zorgdrager, Greta Stauch, Kennah Brackett, Hayden Baldwin, River Osgood, Pali Sauer, Olivia DeRose, Sophie Arnett-Simon, Hazel Rinehart, Courtney Lebsock and Anna Enssle have worked hard to perfect their pieces throughout the few weeks they've spent learning the tunes.
With little assistance from Walters, these students have spent their class periods working with and relying on one another to learn each piece, memorize it, and become confident with their performance. They will also be performing a few of these pieces at their next concert in March.
Cupidgrams have become a Niwot Choir staple over the years, and a fun tradition that brings the choir members together as both friends and teammates. And it gives students the opportunity to show their gratitude for teachers and friends.
