The Niwot High School boys basketball team had a long two-game week where they took on Fort Morgan High School and Northridge High School. Niwot snapped the seven-game losing streak that has plagued their season by beating Fort Morgan 56-34. Niwot wasn't able to make a streak of wins following the Fort Morgan game as they lost to Northridge 67-46.
Niwot jumped out early against the Fort Morgan Mustangs with a dominant first half. The Cougars were able to coast afterwards, easing towards their first win in over two months. Senior Jackson Carano led the scoring with 23 points, while senior Brighton Langenegger added 13 and sophomore Elliot Wisecup added nine. Langenegger dominated the boards with 18 rebounds with Carano pulling down nine.
Langenegger also led with four assists and junior Taylor Rodanski added three more. Wisecup had four steals to lead the team, and the Cougars limited their turnovers to 15 on the night.
Niwot wasn't able to jump out against Northridge as the Grizzlies scored 24 points in the first quarter to quickly put the game out of reach. Niwot battled, scoring 16 points in both the second and fourth quarters, but they couldn't keep Northridge off the board as they lost 67-46.
On Monday, Jan. 22, the Cougars hosted Mountain View in a game which had been postponed a week earlier. Niwot started strong, taking 14-11 lead in the first quarter, and expanding the lead to 32-24 at the half.
Mountain View closed the gap in the third quarter, but Niwot still led 39-37. A disastrous fourth quarter saw Mountain View put up 22 points while holding the Cougars to five points, turning what looked like another win for Niwot into a lopsided loss, 59-44.
Niwot has 10 games left on the schedule, including rematches with teams they have played before, and will try to regroup for the next game.
Niwot will play Roosevelt High School at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Niwot High while a Thursday game against Riverdale Ridge High School will be at Riverdale Ridge at 7:30 p.m.
