Goblins and ghouls ramble about in Niwot

Snow came early on Saturday, Oct. 28, but it did not deter the hundreds of costumed children (and adults) who gathered in Niwot for the annual Great Pumpkin Party.

Pat Murphy, who has been the champion and chief sponsor of the event for over 25 years, was on hand to welcome the children and their parents. "Such a great turnout," she said, in spite of the weather.

Murphy's The Niwot Group at Compass Realtors offered treats and hosted a petting zoo for the children. The Niwot Business Association and the Niwot Local Improvement District provided funding for the event as well.

A choir of costumed revelers from Niwot Elementary School, consisting of third, fourth and fifth-graders, sang to the gathered crowd at Left Hand Corner under the direction of NES music teacher Abbey Madry.

After presentation of the Curtis Lizakowski Golden Hammer Award to Bill O'Donnell, and Jerry and Marsha Slepicka, for their work with Scouts and 4H, respectively, the children then joined the Scouts from Troop 161, who provided a color guard, and the Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band, for a parade down 2nd Avenue to the tune of "I Want Candy."

A horse and carriage was on hand to carry passengers back and forth between old town and Cottonwood Square. The magic show originally scheduled for Cottonwood Square was canceled due to the inclement weather, but twisted balloons were handed out by Ann Lincoln to children instead.

The Niwot High School Key Club sponsored a haunted house again this year in the former Feed Store, with costumed children lined up outside to enter the scary structure.
