Niwot Market – open for business

The Niwot Market is alive and well, and, "Open for Business."

In the weeks following the passing of Bert Steele, the face of the Niwot Market for over 20 years, many customers have asked whether the Niwot Market will continue.

The answer, according to Bert Steele's daughter Alison Steele, and his son, Seth Steele, is a resounding "Yes."

Though their father's passing after a short illness was unexpected, Alison and Seth Steele and other family members are not going anywhere.

"I've been asked by many customers whether the Market will continue after my dad died," Alison Steele said. Her answer is an unequivocal "Yes."

"I do want to say thank you for all the support, cards, messages and contributions to the scholarship fund," she said. "So many people have sent cards and told us stories about Dad. I loved hearing and still love hearing the things he has done for people and hope Seth and I can continue all his acts of kindness."

Seth Steele echoed his sister's sentiments. "The most important thing is to recognize the incredible support we have received from the people of this town," he said.

Bert Steele had plans in place for his legacy at the Market long ago, with both Alison and Seth Steele serving important roles in the day-to-day operation of the beloved business. Though Bert Steele was the primary owner of the Niwot Market, all four of his children have been co-owners of the family business for many years, and will continue in that role.

Alison Steele explained that adjustments had to be made in who handled what tasks at the store, but that operations have continued uninterrupted after his death, with the Market remaining open even during the Celebration of Life for her father. Friday night dinners, which regularly sell out at the Market, were interrupted for a few weeks, but resumed until their conclusion in early September as planned.

What can customers do to support the Market? As Bert Steele often said, "Don't just shop at the Market for things you can get at a convenience store-buy meat, milk and potatoes too!"
