Robert "Bert" Merrill Steele

Oct. 16, 1950 - Aug. 7, 2023

Robert "Bert" Merrill Steele passed away peacefully on August 7, 2023, in Niwot, Colorado, at the age of 72. Born on October 16, 1950, in Fort Collins, Colorado, he leaves behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and community.

A true grocer at heart, Bert found comfort and joy in his work and his community. He held a deep affection for his family, his roots, and a hard day's work that came along with running a local neighborhood market. His dedication and knack for managing a successful business, while simultaneously giving back, made him a beloved figure in the community.

Robert had a profound love for his family, and the pride he took in his children and grandchildren was evident in every aspect of his life. He is survived by his four children: Seth Steele (Kirsten Larsen), Alison Steele (Pete Kraft), Emily Dunn (Jeff Dunn), Sara Wollesen (Brandon Wollesen); four grandchildren: Kendall, Emery, Elizabeth, August; and two step-grandchildren: Emma and Noah. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Julie Steele (Randy Williams), his sister, Carol Kates (Russ Kates) and their three children.

Beyond his professional life, Bert was a man of many passions. As a 1968 graduate of Fort Collins High School and former high school wrestler, he had an undeniable love for sports and always had a soft spot for the underdog. His passion for horse racing was a hobby that brought excitement and meaningful social connections into his life. Good music was a constant companion to Bert. Whether it was the two-step, the three-step, or the waltz, he loved to dance and shared this bond with his children. Bert had an endearing interest in classic cars and took meticulous care of his red 1963 Chevy pickup truck, which became a familiar sight in local parades, car shows and across the town of Niwot.

Life wasn't without its challenges for Bert. He faced difficult times including business setbacks, however, his unwavering determination and resilience allowed him to rebuild what was lost, which is a testament to his work ethic and character.

Bert was preceded in death by his father, Merrill Seth Steele, and his mother, Ellen Pauline Steele. His legacy will continue to shine through the lives he touched and the memories he created. He will be deeply missed by his loving family, friends, and the community he held so dear.

An Open House Celebration of Life in honor of Bert Steele will be held on Sunday, August 20 at the Knaus Farm (7581 Nimbus Road, Niwot, CO 80503) from 1-5 pm with remarks scheduled for 2:30 pm. The family is planning a memorial scholarship fund in Bert's honor to benefit Fort Collins and Niwot area wrestlers.
