All Local, All The Time
In 1987, Jerry and Marsha Slepicka bought a lot and, as per county regulation, had to keep it mowed. So they bought a tractor, and that original 1946 John Deere B turned into a somewhat unexpected hobby (collecting tractors) and a tradition: an annual tractor collection show.
This year, the show will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, at the Slepickas' property, 6675 N. 79th Street in Niwot. Visitors will have the opportunity to walk around, check out the vintage farm equipment, and learn about tractors.
The Niwot Community Association began sponsoring the event in 2022, helping with parking and traffic management for the popular attraction.
Originally, the Slepickas' collection of tractors–now they have more than 40 tractors and other engines–was supposed to help fund the younger Slepickas' college careers. But when all the kids earned scholarships and expressed a desire to keep the tractors, Jerry and Marsha had to switch gears.
The tradition of an annual tractor collection show as an educational opportunity was born. Many of the tractors and engines date from the 1920s through 1950s, and many of the "more exotic" pieces such as the Gibson tractors are no longer in production. For example, the Gibson Manufacturing Corporation ceased production of their tractors in the early 1950s, and only made an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 machines.
As reported on the Niwot Community Association website, Slepicka said, "As of today, we have 16 full size tractors, 9 Gibson tractors, 25 hit and miss engines, and 12 small engines. The tractors are on display throughout the spring/summer in our front yard."
Many of their tractors are taken to the Dougherty Museum for the Yesteryear Farm Show (Aug. 25-27 this year), then returned to the Slepicka property to be stored in their tractor sheds.
Since Niwot has deep agricultural roots, the Slepickas see their show as a way to honor and preserve community heritage.
