NHS girls soccer wins final two games

The Niwot High School girls soccer team entered the final two weeks of the season with four games slated against the Thompson Valley Golden Eagles, the Skyline Falcons, the Roosevelt Roughriders, and the Mountain View Mountain Lions.

Niwot's games covered all the angles with a 2-1 loss to the Golden Eagles, followed by a 0-0 tie with the Falcons, and finally, two victories, 9-0 over Roosevelt and 2-0 over Mountain View, to close out the season.

Niwot's game against the Golden Eagles was a close matchup, given the Goldens Eagles' 10-3-1 record, and the sloppy field conditions. Niwot ended up losing the game, 2-1, but kept it close against one of the best teams in 4A. Senior Mia Dumler scored Niwot's only goal, which came in the second period.

Niwot's next game was against the Skyline Falcons who put up an even fight as the game ended in a scoreless tie, 0-0. Freshman Mariah Fletemeyer was in net the entire game making 18 saves to secure a shutout. This theme continued through the week as Niwot didn't allow a single goal for the rest of the season.

All three of Niwot's games were scheduled one after another, so the next day the Cougars played Roosevelt. This game was also Niwot's senior night, so after a pregame filled with celebration for the eight Niwot seniors, the game was a blowout, a 9-0 win for Niwot.

Niwot's goals came from a number of different players, with one goal each from junior Menbere Sullivan, senior Tiffany Yie, and senior Alexandria Boyer. Dumler scored two goals in the game, and senior Martha McCarthy scored an insane four goals to lead the offense.

Yie and junior Margaux Boyer each contributed two assists, while Amanda Boyer, Sullivan, senior Sophia Gugliemli, junior Paige Russell and sophomore Bela Mendez each posted one assist. Junior Sami Sessa and Mariah Fletemeyer shared the net, both getting half-game shutouts.

Niwot's season-ending match was a great finale as the Cougars dominated Mountain View. The final score was 2-0, with McCarthy notching two more goals with freshman Rylie Fletemeyer and freshman Brynn Schlarb assisting those goals. Mariah Fletemeyer played a majority of the game, 65 minutes, in goal, while Sessa played 15 minutes, with the two combining for a shutout.

Niwot's season is officially over with a final record of 6-8-1 and a league record of 5-3-1. The Cougar season started slowly, with a 2-6 record through the first eight games, but the team figured out how to win, going 5-4-1 on the rest of the season.

The Cougars finished 41st in Class 4A RPI, with the top 32 teams making the playoffs. While Niwot didn't make the postseason, they dominated their final week, and with new coach Stephen Dimit and a young squad, they have a lot to look forward to.
