NCA presented with Eagle Scout project for west end sign

The Niwot Community Association (NCA) held its monthly board meeting May 3 at the Mountain View Fire Rescue Niwot Station.

Life Scout Montana Heather gave a presentation about his proposed Eagle Scout service project to create a town sign for the west entrance to Niwot. The 4 or 5 foot tall stone sign would have a carved message welcoming people to Niwot.

The sign would be installed on the north side of Niwot Road and east of the railroad tracks in the strip of land between the sidewalk and the fence. The land is in the county right-of-way for Niwot Road, and Heather has obtained permission from the county to install the sign and surrounding landscaping in that spot. The presentation made to the NCA is part of Heather's fundraising campaign to pay for this project.

The NCA board then turned to regular business. NCA president David Limbach talked about the community group event signs on the south side of Niwot Road east of the North 83rd Street intersection. Limbach initiated a conversation with other groups in the community in order to coordinate usage. A shared spreadsheet has been started so that groups can list their requests. Responses collected thus far have clearly shown that there are overlapping requests that will need to be resolved.

The NCA's annual Niwot Clean-Up Day is set for Saturday, May 20. This event will start at 8 a.m. and continue until 12 noon in the Niwot High School parking lot. NCA project manager John Barto is in the final stages of recruiting volunteers.

Information about the materials which will be accepted for drop-off can be found at the NCA website at niwot.org. NCA members can drop off two loads for free. Non-members pay $40 per load. Membership more than pays for itself for those who participate in Clean-Up Day.

The next large NCA event will be the Slepicka Tractor Show on June 10. This second annual event will give the public a chance to learn about the tractors that are quite visible when going by the Slepicka home at 6675 N. 79th Street.

NCA Area 8 (95th Street to US 287, Oxford Road to CO 52) representative Derek Curd spoke about the ongoing restoration work for Little Gaynor Lake. There have been some problems with water quality in past years. Curd said the work has been successful and the lake now has a clean bill of health. Boulder County is now working on a plant revegetation project for the area.

NCA memberships are up to 310, which is still below pre-pandemic levels. The membership campaign continues with hopes to reach 400 members.

Kathy Koehler reported from the Niwot Rural Community District (NRCD) - Design Review Committee that the new BMO bank in Niwot (which was the Bank of the West before the BMO acquisition) submitted their plans for their business sign design. The NRCD has authority over building designs in the historical district downtown. The committee rejected the bank's color scheme because the blue and red colors are too bright. The committee recommended more muted colors.

NCA members and the public are welcome to attend NCA monthly board meetings. If you wish to speak or want a specific issue discussed, please contact the NCA board at least one week in advance of the meeting to be included on the agenda. Board meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Mountain View Fire Protection District Firehouse #4 (8500 Niwot Rd.) in Niwot.
