Niwot High School Students participate in nationwide walkout

This past Wednesday thousands of schools across America participated in a walkout protesting gun violence and school shootings. One of the participating schools was Niwot High School.

Hundreds of Niwot High students participated in the walkout, which lasted 30 minutes between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. The first 20 minutes consisted of speeches from a variety of students while the last 10 minutes consisted of a march around the school with students leading a chant.

The speeches mainly focused on two issues: the legality of guns, and issues such as transgender rights.

The walkout was a demonstration of the power students have, their frustration and fear and allowed the students to exercise their collective voice. Their voices were definitely heard, as the walkouts were covered by major news organizations such as CNN, MSNBC, and the New York Times.

If the turnout is any indication, future voters are going to be involved, and stand firm on issues important to them. The protests are coming after a long year involving over 100 school shootings so far.

Colorado schools have experienced more incidents of violence and or threats of violence than any other month in recent years. Following the tragic events in Tennessee, students appear to be more riled up than ever to spark change.
