All Local, All The Time

Golfing for cats and dogs

Niwot High golfer and International Baccalaureate (IB) student Mina O'Dell was looking for a CAS project (Creativity, Activity, Service) that would benefit a local worthy cause.

"I'm an animal person, and I also play golf," O'Dell said. "I thought I would combine the two."

O'Dell decided to organize a charity golf tournament, which will be held Saturday, June 24, at Twin Peaks Golf Course in Longmont. The funds raised will benefit the Longmont Humane Society. "We got our cat there, eleven years ago," O'Dell said.

The event is a 4-person 18-hole scramble; teams will tee off in a shotgun start. The cost is $120 per person, and O'Dell hopes to raise $5,000 to benefit the animals at the Humane Society. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers.

Keith Martin, the golf pro at Twin Peaks, was instrumental in helping O'Dell put the event together. "He's been my golf coach since second grade," she said. "He was able to help me arrange it."

O'Dell is looking for sponsors, and has already lined up Niwot Market, The Niwot Tavern and Gunbarrel Import Motors. "I plan to get more sponsors, and my mom is helping me," O'Dell said. Anyone interested in playing or sponsoring can contact her at [email protected].
