All Local, All The Time

LHVC: This was then

In celebration of 25 years, the Courier staff thought it would be fun to give a brief summary of articles from Volume 1, Issue Number 1 of the Left Hand Valley Courier, published April 1, 1997:

  • Niwot celebrated the recording of the town plat 122 years prior on March 30, 1875.
  • Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church added 5,000 square feet to its building.
  • Niwot High School was celebrating 25 years of educating local high school students.
  • Niwot Elementary School sent a team to Odyssey of the Mind competition and Sunset Middle School sent teams to Science Olympiad and Forensics Competition.
  • Thomas J. Moore joined the law firm of Warren & Carlson, LLP, in Niwot, now known as Warren, Carson & Moore, LLP.
  • "Maintaining Niwot's Semi-Rural Character" by Niwot architect and Courier co-owner Ron Goodman was published along with an editorial entitled, "What is Semi-Rural?" describing Niwot's designation in the 1978 Boulder County Comprehensive Plan as "semi-rural."
  • A ground-breaking ceremony was held for Senior Housing in Niwot located south of Cottonwood Square.
  • Community Food Share purchased land south of Monarch Road to build a 25,000 square-foot distribution center.
  • A new, lighted baseball scoreboard was dedicated at the Niwot High School baseball field.
  • "Out in Leftfield" by Bruce Warren highlighted HEATH IRWIN, BLAKE IRWIN, KATIE BOWMAN, MANDY AUER, SARA BOTE, KRISTIN PALAS, ANDREW BOWMAN, and JON REED as local athletes who would go on to compete in college or the pros.
  • Jessie Hull, 4th-grader at Niwot Elementary School, was highlighted as Niwot's Youngest Entrepreneur in the Kids Spotlight column. Hull started and ran her business creating Beanie Beds for Beanie Babies, the popular mini-stuffed animals of that era. At the time of publication, Hull had sold over 2,000 Beanie Beds, sold in ten stores from Colorado to Florida, including The Berry Patch in Niwot, the first store to carry the product.

Columns published in the first edition included:
